Dad and theater daughters (15 & 17) doing our annual broadway blitz April 9-15.  We already have tix for Lobby Hero and Say Something Bunny.  Have seen Hamilton, DEH, CFA already.  Looking for solid musicals but also plays.  Also trying to stay on a budget with TDF or rush tickets, though could do one more show at full price (Once on this Island or Carousel or Miss you like Hell?).  They do want to see Play that goes Wrong and possibly Spongebob.  And they've never seen BOM.  What would be a good top five list?  Thanks!

The Band's Visit is spectacular, and there are consistently very cheap tickets on Stubhub. (Many times less expensive than rush would be)

I'd suggest either My Fair Lady of Carousel, and have it up to you which show you like better. The cast of Carousel is genius, while the creative team behind My Fair Lady is just asking for it to be a gorgeous production. They are equal in my book.

I'd also suggest Spongebob and The Play that goes Wrong. Neither are great theater, but both are a totally fun evening.

In terms or straight plays, I'm mostly looking forward to The Iceman Cometh and Angles in America, although price is an issue for both, as well as Angles in America being two parts, and The Iceman being nearly 4 hours.

OMG, thanks for mentioning the Band's Visit.  We had wanted to see that but I thought when I looked at it before it was closing before we got there.  Looks like it is open for our dates - and my Visa will get a workout this morning...

I hear ya on Spongebob and the PTGW.  If we find other shows, they may fall down our priority list.  Carousel is higher on our list as of today, but I'll mention My Fair Lady to my girls.  We looked at Angels in America, but tix are pricey and the cheaper ones are not available for our open dates.  I'll have to looks at Iceman.  Thanks again.

Sweeney Todd is a unique experience. You could buy one immersive seat and two balcony seats and have the girls switch at intermission if you want to keep under budget.

Also, if you go to an 11 PM show at Birdland, you get half off the cover charge with a same day Broadway ticket..

Margaritaville and Mean Girls are musicals that will be open when you are visiting that you may want to research.

i am already convinced that I will have a blast at Summer:The Donna Summer Musical which will be in previews when you are in town. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at Ticketmaster so maybe you can grab some cheap seats?

Have a great time!!!

I’m in the same boat. Already have tickets for a return visit to Hamilton, Harry Potter, and Carousel. Have 3 spots left and trying to decide between:

Lobby Hero
Children of a lesser God
Mean Girls
OOTI
Miss you like Hell
Sweeney Todd

Never been to the public and do want to get another play in. So much to see and so little time!

You should definitely consider mean girls.

Great info on Birdland - thanks.  We've never been, but have taken in some afternoon jam sessions at Smalls before our shows.  This time, I was thinking about trying to fit in a late show at the Village Vanguard.

Rush tickets for The Play That Goes Wrong are easy to get. BOM is my favorite, so if it's on your kids' list and you're willing to try the lottery and/or do standing room, I definitely recommend it. You might also be able to get $69 or $79 tickets if you'd rather have the guarantee. I also second The Band's Visit and Sweeney ToddPuffs is also very funny and appears on TDF a lot.

Awesome for you (er, should I say our kids?)...  And wow on the Harry Potter tickets.  I've looked into them, but it ain't happening for our crew.  We did see Daniel Radcliffe in How to Succeed..., which was great.  We went to the Public a couple of years ago and I'd like to go back this time if possible.  We're leaning heavily toward Carousel too.

We may have to try for BOM standing room as they have never seen.  Sweeney Todd looks way out of our budget, but I'll have to keep my eye on it for options.  Thanks.

Highly recommend Mean Girls for your daughters.  It got great reviews here in Washington and our family and all the teen friends LOVED it!  The Play that Goes Wrong is slapstick, silly humor that appeals to most teens and you should be able to get a discount ticket without too much problem.  It's also a small house and almost any seat would do.

I'm heading to NYC with a high school group later this month and they are all SO excited to see Spongebob!  I don't think anyone has mentioned Anastasia.  It's been another huge hit with the teens I know; especially the girls.

And BOM just finished it's DC stop and my 17 year old got tickets for his birthday.  It might be a bit much for a 15 year old...but that's a call each parent has to make.  But remember you're sitting next to them and think about how embarrassed they (or you) might be by some of the subject matter.

Thanks for your take on these shows.  We did split up for a show slot last summer and my young one saw Anastasia and thought it was just OK.  I did have tickets for BOM for us to go locally 3-4 years ago, but when I got some reviews back from friends, I sold the tix - they were now happy...  I have since seen it with my son, and the 15 (almost 16) yo should be fine with this show.  We saw Avenue Q last summer there and a couple of scenes test me sitting next to my girls...

I'd personally say Once on This Island would be a great addition. I went with my high school drama club (all 14-18 year olds) and every single one of us walked out of the theatre totally in love with the production.

Hey all, thanks for your quick and awesome feedback. Based on these suggestions and a little bit more research and talking to my girls, we booked the bands visit and once on this island today.

Now we just have three open slots that will hopefully be filled with cheaper seats on TDF or rush tickets. We’re thinking of book of mormon and hopefully carousel (if they offer rush or TDF) and maybe even rushing come from away again.

I saw MISS YOU LIKE HELL in San Diego when it was running there and I wouldn't recommend trying to squeeze that production into your schedule if you're only going to do five shows.  Of course I don't know what work was done between now and then.

The Play that Goes Wrong.

Lots of discount options, very accessible and family-friendly. The most common criticism I've seen of the show tends to come from snobs who complain that it isn't Noises Off, but the show isn't aiming to be high brow and succeeds brilliantly at what it does. Your kids will love it.

I'm right in between your daughter's ages and I'm happy to see that you booked The Band's Visit & Once on this Isand for them! I'm planning on catching both shows n my trip to NYC. I know that you're looking for cheaper shows, so hopefully you can snag tickets for Spongebob & Mean Girls! Spongebob is usually on TKTS and they also have a rush policy. I've heard nothing but great things about Mean Girls and Spongebob is fun all around.

Kind of unrelated but your girls will probably love Isaac Powell from OOTI. The majority of teens at the stagedoor are there for him - lol
