Home for the holidays couldn't even crack 100k the week leading up to Xmas, amazing lol

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS averaged just 280 people per performance. John Lithgow outgrossed the show and he only did 3 performances and nearly had more people see his show in his three performances than HFTH. Interesting note today: while checking out the TKTS app around 1:00, I noticed only four Broadway shows available; John Lithgow, The Children, The Parisian Woman & Home For The Holidays. How sad to walk up to the TKTS booth and only have those as your options(more shows were available earlier in the day). This week is basically the make or break week for shows. If you can't make money this week, it's time to pack it in.

Thoughts:

1. DEH is still incredibly strong. Set a new weekly high, at an average ticket price of over $235. It wasn’t that long ago that we were shocked when Hamilton was at that level;

2. The Band’s Visit had an amazing gross for a seven performance week;

3. The Parisian Woman is not faring well. It’s sliding week to week.

Of course DEH is "still" looking good.   Tickets for these dates were purchased MONTHS ago -- and, a quick look at their website...tickets are avaialble in Jan (likely only premium, and during the week...and then weekends open up in Feb, but the spring has availability.)   I'm not screaming doomsday for the show, certainly.

Has anyone discussed what went wrong with the Miss Saigon revival?  The way they hyped it after the London run, I really would never have predicted in their closing weeks, Cats would be grossing over a million and Saigon would be in the 600's

In what universe?  The gross still reflects discounted tickets in this the second or third busiest week of the year.

I think people just didn't need to see Miss Saigon again.  I saw the Fathom Events last summer (or was it the summer before?) and loved it; ironically, the result was that I had no need to see it live again.

The (increased) gross also reflects only 7 performances.  "Looking good" may be a stretch in the big picture (based on known and unknown info), but the related comment was a long way from wholly unreasonable (based on known and unknown info).

Happy for Once on This Island for gaining momentum, and still going up in gross even though there was one less performance. Spongebob is climbing likely due to the holidays but happy to see it succeed before Frozen comes in. Home for the Holidays is a mess. I can't wait to see the Waitress numbers for when Sara and Jason are together, only single seats left for the first few performances at $600.00 a ticket.

I saw the revival once in London, saw the Fathom Events cinema screening, and saw the Broadway revival three times. If I had an opportunity, I'd go again.

It's really not that surprising. The London production wasn't as successful as people (Inc Cameron) make out. They were expecting to run years and it started to slow down in it's first year. Probably not helped by them announcing a huge advance and saying it had paid back it's investment early, when the advance and paying back investment aren't the same thing. Makes good pr though

I also suspect, although announced as a limited run, they hoped it would extend on Broadway

Wasn't one of their perfs on Christmas Day?  For a show hovering at or above 100% for a couple months, I wonder if that number of people aren't willing to go on Christmas itself (so you get a solid number, but not spectacular, knocking down your average).  Just a thought...

A combination of factors, that many people have already seen it, that with the mood of the country, maybe people want to see something uplifting and not a show that is depressing from start to finish, that its not a show geared towards families like Cats, that the actors in it aren't known beyond the theater crowd. IDK.

Miss Saigon may have had some revolutionary design and performances years ago, but content-wise it was never an award winner. In today's climate it is melodramatic and offensive (in my opinion). Oddly enough, one of the most "meh" plays this season for me (M Butterfly) did an amazing job at dissecting why Miss Saigon is so problematic. It also got a bad Times review, and some lukewarm other reviews... which can be killer. I'd like to think audiences got more critical.

That being said, I'm a liberal NYC theater fanatic and I care about these things. Do mid-western tourists?

Christmas Day would not be accounted for in this report, since it was Monday and the gross reports go from Monday to Sunday.

That being said, for both Waitress and Once on This Island this is a case where the potential gross percentage is a number to look at and take into consideration. Yes, Waitress took a dip, but pulling in 95% of your gross potential is nothing that the producers need to worry about. As for Once on This Island, pulling in 85% of your gross potential is again a pretty good sign, as it would take some extraordinarily bad producing to put up a show that would have a weekly break-even point that high.
