Ranking Live TV Musicals, including A Christmas Story Live |
Paste had a spot-on ranking. Here's how I'd rank by quality:
1) Grease
2) Hairspray
3) The Wiz
4) A Christmas Story
5) The Sound of Music
6) Peter Pan
7) The Passion
I don't count the non-live ones like Rocky Horror or Dirty Dancing

In my eyes, Grease has been the only good one. Everything else has been totally missable.
I still liked The Sound of Music the best save for Underwood's acting. Everything else about it was wonderful and they stuck to the script. The other broadcasts have made too many changes and cuts for me to fully enjoy with The Wiz and Peter Pan being the worst offenders. I enjoyed A Christmas Story quite a bit.

Grease is the only one worth mentioning. I genuinely was surprised was a success, utilized the medium to the fullest and even breathed new life into Grease and is the only one of these that felt worthy of rewatching.
Hairspray should have been done by the FOX crew. It could have been INCREDIBLE and it just felt...tired. I almost wonder had they had a second go would it have been better.
Grease was by far the best. The Wiz and Hairspray were done well enough. The Sound of Music makes one appreciate Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer all the more. Peter Pan was a slog.
I'm wondering if this brief revival of live musicals is almost over? NBC hasn't found the success they wanted, and I'm convinced Bye Bye Birdie with JLo will never happen. Fox is supposed to air Rent in 2019, but maybe they'll get cold feet if they think Grease was a fluke. Besides Rent, all that's left is Jesus Christ Superstar.
I think they should do Cinderella again. I love the idea of TV musicals being revived on TV. And unlike Peter Pan, Cinderella is fairly well remembered by Millennials thanks to Brandy's version. I think it could be a real hit, and since Meron and Zadan did Hairspray twice, they have no excuse not to do Cinderella again.
For production quality:
1) Grease
2) A Christmas Story
3) The Wiz
4) The Sound of Music
5) Hairspray
6) Peter Pan
For personal enjoyment:
1) Grease
2) The Sound of Music
3) The Wiz
4) Hairspray
5) A Christmas Story
6) Peter Pan
I didn't care for A Christmas Story Live -- and I loved the musical on Broadway. Doesn't it say a lot that the live commercial with Hugh Jackman generated more excitement?
I'm not sure this spells the end of these live TV musicals-- although a Vanity Fair article today was headlined Has A Christmas Story Live! Killed the Live TV Musical for Good? -- but it's hard for me to imagine getting as excited as I was when they started.
The format needs yet another shot in the arm. It seemed like it wasn't going to be around for the long haul after Peter Pan but then The Wiz and especially Grease showed how well it could be done. But Hairspray just didn't have that magic and I don't think A Christmas Story as a musical was accessible to enough of the general public despite the decently received Broadway production and the source material. I'm not sure Jesus Christ Superstar is going to be the answer either but perhaps a big time family offering like Cinderella or Annie might be able to give the format the next boost it needs.
