Since a few songs have been updated for Broadway and some cast members have changed form Chicago, does anyone think we will get an updated Broadway version of the SpongeBob Cast Recording?

I can't find the post, but I saw Danny Skinner address someone asking this on Instagram and he said he didn't have any idea if they would be.

I doubt it since the Chicago recording came out so recently (and even though some songs have been updated, there were no added songs), but stranger things have happened...

this type of thing is so rare i can only think of a few instances it has happened: Grey Gardens and Fun Home. I was kind of disappointed it didn't happen with War Paint because I preferred a few of those songs from the tryout. I guess Lorelei did something kind of similar.

At the stage door a few of the cast members expressed that they have a feeling they might be making a new recording.

I don't think so as they just released a cast recording for the Chicago run recently. There would be no point in another cast recording if they just released one.

This has happened with many other shows like Miss Saigon and there are much more that I can't think of right now). Sorry about that. SpongeBob Updated Cast Recording

New recordings were released for both Grease (the 94 revival) and Wonderful Town when Brooke Shields took over.

Kiss of the Spider Woman received a new cast album when Vanessa Williams replaced Chita Rivera.

Hello, Dolly! got a new recording with Pearl Bailey and that entire company.

Truly I hope they do because of the Broadway cast replacements if nothing else- they are improvements all around (excepting maybe Rua, not that it's a downgrade). No offense to the Chicago cast, there's just a sense of miscasting going on with some of the voices (Lopez as Krabs, who I could not decipher WHAT he was trying to do, while Norris has a lot better hang of it and I can clearly recognize what he is doing). As we'll Jai'Len Christine Li Josey's performance is too good not to have recorded!!

I think it's unfortunate they did the Chicago recording, honestly. It does sound like an unfinished work, with a lot of the "voices" inconsistent and it is oddly low-energy? I will say I went to see this show despite this recording, not because of it. It's hard for me to reccomend the show to others without a recording I can confidently use to back it up lol

Bikini Bottom Day, for example, is completely new after the characters are introduced. Wouldn't be surprised if we got a new recording as I'm sure Nickelodeon plans to make a lot of $$$ on rights. They'll want what is in the page represented on a recording.

They might only re-record the parts of the album that have changed, the same way that Fun Home did. That would be smart of them.

They definitely need to do a new OBC. All of the songs, minus Just a Simple Sponge and Best Day Ever, have changed.

Hi All,

I'm just wondering if anyone has any updates either way on the possibility of a new recording.

Thanks!

Missed this thread the first time around, but I would be happy to get a new recording. The new version of Bikini Bottom Day is so much better! Seems pretty unlikely though, since they released the Chicago version as the OBC (changes notwithstanding).

What about the bizarre vinyl only bonus tracks though?? What's up with that?????

According to Wesley, JC, & Jailen (Plankton, Old Man Jenkins, Pearl) a new cast recording is very unlikely. Wesley tweeted (and now deleted) about asking producers for an updated recording but the answer was always no. I love Spongebob a lot, but the show isn't making enough $ to fund a new recording.

Regarding the "bizarre vinyl only bonus tracks", they're just reprises. There's no "Bikini Bottom Day (Reprise)" (Spongebob only, when he wakes up after intermission) and "Just a Simple Sponge (Reprise)" on the cast recording, just like there's no "Sincerely, Me (Reprise)" or "For Forever (Reprise) on the Dear Evan Hansen recording and no John Laurens Interlude on the Hamilton one. It's nothing special or new.

don't message me thinking im taylor trensch?? what would he be doing on bww?? you can't possibly be that dumb bye

Yes I am well aware of the content... I was referring to the strange decision to release them only on the vinyl edition of the album.

Honestly it's kindof unforgivable to leave off reprises in todays day and age, when many cast recording barely clock in at one hour on a 80 minute CD. Entr'actes, reprises etc should be included.

What are the chances of this happening now with the show’s nomination successes?

And there were some pretty big revisions to the score.

I wish they would but it seems unlikely at this point. Even with the nominations.

I kind of get why, but it seems like it was a bad decision to record the cast album after their tryout, while the show was still a work in progress. Now whenever anyone listens to that album for years to come, they won't really be listening to the actual show, they'll be listening to a draft, with many different actors than who originated it on Broadway. Plus, if anyone is doing the show regionally or in school, they wouldn't be able to listen to the recording because of the different lyrics and rewrites. It reminds me of 13 recorded their album in early previews, before the show became a one-act musical.

I know why, but the logic behind this decision is flawed and I think it was a bad choice.
