I was in town tonight to see Clockwork Orange and when we got to the theatre we were told the performance had been cancelled at last moment. They did not give a reason . Has anyone heard anything.

I hope they had a good reason because we wasted a lot of money getting here and it was too late to see another show.

That truly sucks and I'm sorry that happened to you.  I'm sure whatever the reason, it wasn't possible to do the show or they would have.

Most likely poor ticket sales. but if you ask, they'll probably fabricate a reason like "cast illness" or "cast injury".  If you look at all remaining performances, practically every seat remains unsold.  It's highly embarrassing that it's closing on December 2nd since it knows nobody in their right mind would come to see it during the lucrative holiday season.

Bad acting, bad singing, anti-Catholic mess of a show.  Got terrible word of mouth by me & by others.

Good riddance.  Consider yourself lucky it was cancelled.

I agree that it was THAT bad.  I could not understand how it did so well in London.

If it hasn’t been selling well have they been canncelling performances a lot, then?

It should have never opened.  But, having them cancelling it the SAME day when people come from all over the country to see NYC theater?  Dick move.

Not selling enough tickets is not a legitimate reason for cancelling. If we were the only tickets sold they still had a obligation to perform.

I've been at off-Broadway shows with maybe 20 people in the audience. The show must go on. Maybe cast members are sick and so are their understudies?

^ Right. I’m sure they all got sick between the matinee and eve performances. Most likely they didn’t want the strain of doing two shows for a small audience. If so, what complete unprofessionalism.

I know this is no consolation, and I completely understand your frustration, but consider yourself lucky. The show was a gigantic heap of garbage.

I believe they only have one male swing. Possibly too many cast members were sick.

There is sometimes a clause in a contract for a production that if X amount of tickets aren’t sold then they have to cancel the performance since there are a lot of other people getting paid by the House.  Not saying this was the case in this incident but it does happen especially in small houses.

They were due to close early in January so I don't see what is so embarrassing.

And something must have happened that they had no choice but to cancel the performance. I think it is pretty nasty to call it a "d*ck" move unless you know why they had to cancel.. Looked in my Playbill and they only have one offstage understudy. I would expect 2 actors were unable to perform. If that is the case, I find the show trashing posts pretty nasty. Because some of you did not like it doesn't mean others didn't. I personally liked it. Not everything is for everyone. JMO

I know this show is divisive but all this bashing is seriously uncalled for. Matt Doyle went on for Jonno because he was out with a stomach bug/food poisoning. Matt posted that he had back issues/sciatica a week or so ago and since this production is physically intense, he probably tweaked it again. He was on his way to the doctor/PT right after the show. In the Playbill, I don't even recall an understudy listed for Jonno. Alek went on as Georgie and Jordan (swing) went on in Alek's part.

I'm sorry, but shows that have no understudies for a lead have canceled in the past when the lead has been injured/too sick to perform. Were they ever accused of "unprofessionalism" or that they were "too embarrassed" to perform to low audiences?

1) I, too, thought that this was an incredibly idiotic adaptation of a classic British dystopian novel (like this season's equally [but differently] awful 1984) - that aside;

2) The show has, as mentioned, one understudy, who, according to the program, doesn't even cover all the roles. I don't know when or if rules changed, but I believe that there was a time that commercial, Equity Off Broadway productions required understudies for all actors. I've seen several nonprofit Off Bway shows cancel performances because they are not required to have understudies, but this is new to me.

3) Anyway, I would concur with the summation "no big loss" (as long as you got a refund).

All of the bashing is 100% called for.  If a production is put up for people to pay to see, they have every right to go out in the world and tell everyone what they thought of it.  Obviously, the majority of people think this was a pure hell of a mess.  It was definitely the worst piece of theatre I saw all year.  I would have liked to see Matt Doyle as the lead because he's fantastic in everything and I absolutely could not stand watching the main guy try to act.  When other shows have been canceled due to the star being out it was because that star was the only reason anyone in the theatre was in the theatre and everyone would be entitled to refunds/exchanges, but that isn't the case here. Also, all equity actors have understudies.  Even if the producer decides in advance that an understudy will not go on for Hugh Jackman or Daniel Radcliffe, an actor is still getting paid to be the understudy as per equity rules.

Also, those saying it's "only closing a month early."  It's closing a month early during the busiest time of the year for the industry.  Most shows sell out close, if not all the way, to capacity every performance so that's saying they really have no faith in this.

And if this were a hit show, this thread would be full of "oh I hope she/he is alright".

Like the show or not, an actor is very ill and it appears there is an injured actor. No matter whether it is closing early it just sickens me to see people kicking a production when it is down. As "theatre lovers", you should be ashamed.

And again, there are people who enjoyed this show. Some of you comment like your feelings about this, or other shows, are the final word. They are not.

According to showscore, 48% of critics were positive about it, and 57% of the audience said it was positive, so not sure that is a majority...

If Show-score.com had been around for Moose Murders, it would have called it a hit. That site is ridiculously optimistic.
