Lol, the title made it sound like Bette demanded the audience stop clapping so she could bow in silence. That would have been interesting to see!

But isn't that also a Scott Rudin thing?  Honestly, I like it.  Keeps the gossipy chorus kids from spreading rumors about their stars.  Something that happens far too often and is entirely unprofessional.  I hate hearing nonsense like "they demanded two dressing rooms" and blah blah blah.  When you're a 71 year old living legend you can demand anything you want and shouldn't have to worry about the little chorus boys spreading sh*t about you on Fire Island.

I feel like this is more a Scott Rudin policy, too, not necessarily a Bette thing.

Probably a Scott Rudin thing.  In her other tours all her staff and crew always post pics.

I know someone whose grandmother works at the Shubert and says this is totally untrue (at least on the part of Bette). Scott Rudin does have a social media blackout policy though.

This is more of a Rudin thing then a Bette thing. And on the topic of the social media policy, what's up with the lack of professional pictures? Why do Ermenagrde, Ambrose, and Donna have no photos? It's such a weird thing to do, it feels strangely disrespectful to the actors (they're characters in the story as well, with major involvement in the case of Donna).

Damn, GeorgeandDot, I was just singing your praises and then you go and post this vaguely if unintentionally homophobic stereotype of the men in the ensemble. The entire industry thrives on gossip, from the biggest producers to the cleaning crew. That includes reporters, agents, directors, costumers, IATSE crew, musicians and, yes, even legendary 71-year-old singing/comedy stars. I've personally heard gossip from all of the preceding. (I barely knew either of them and Milton Berle wouldn't shut up about Georgie Jessel!)

In Miss Midler's case, she is careful of her privacy and I agree that should be respected to a point. But a friend of mine was her personal assistant about 30 years ago; if any of the stories I heard were interesting and relevant (they weren't), I'd probably share them now.

GavestonPS, didn't mean for it to be homophobic in any sense.  Simply an observation that I've made over the years since I've been working in the industry.  My gay friends (all of whom were chorus boys) and I would often gossip about Broadway divas that they were working with (we were often on Fire Island too) and I can see how someone like Bette wouldn't want to put up with that.  That's all.  I'm bisexual myself if that helps in my defense.

WTF with the chorus-boy hate? Someone got rejected on Grindr?

As for Grindr, I'm a married woman, so I don't have much experience with it no.

Honestly, I wish more shows would enact social media blackouts aside from explicit PR for the show. I find the Saturday Intermission pictures cloying and unprofessional, as well as all the stuff that mainly the ensemble posts trying to be funny or witty. As I'm lined up going into the theatre, I don't need to see chorus kids hanging from the rafters or sitting on a toilet mugging for the cameras.

Oh.  Then have your husband explain it to you.  Bette demands bow of silence!   ( just a little attempt at humor)

A friend of mine is in the cast of DOLLY. From the beginning, he told me that the non disclosure clause in his contract was the tightest he's ever had to sign. All phones were dropped off at a table outside the rehearsal hall and were given back at the end of the day. This was to prevent photos being leaked. The producer did this; not Bette.

^^^Now tell the truth, Dollypop: is your source really a friend, or did you start stalking him/her once s/he was cast? (j/k)

GeorgeandDot, sorry if I wasn't clear. I tried to use the word "inadvertent" to indicate I wasn't actually accusing you of homophobia. I have no reason to think any such thing of you.

My point wasn't that chorus men don't gossip, just that they do so no more than the butchest Kinsey 0s changing scenery. (Yes, I realize I just employed an equally cliché stereotype.)

TotallyEffed, if you think I'm touchy, you lead a very sheltered life.

This is great. There is way too much rubbish constantly being posted on social media and good on Rudin for having some class and demanding his shows are protected like this. I’ve been in many rehearsal rooms and more time is spent with chorus girls and boys taking selfies than actually interacting with their colleagues. Every major show should ban social media crap posted by cast members.

I wish this social media block was also given to the ladies of WILL & GRACE.  Boy, have they embraced Instagram and now that Debra Messing learned how to post Instagram Stories, the **** has gone crazy.  Debra and Megan (Mullally) need to just take a breather.  Seriously ladies.

Isn't watching things on Instagram voluntary?

Yes, these women need to learn to STFU, as their postings on their own private page have somehow annoyed you.

I don't follow any of this stuff on social media -- it would not interest me in the slightest.  So, I don't see how it can annoy anyone -- just stop following it.  (And I've always though SIPs were beyond stupid -- although I like the reasoning behind  how it started -- just friends amongst bway shows and particularly tours to stay in touch a tad.  but like everything else: it's not private.)

don't like it? don't follow it.  pretty easy.  The last thing I'm doing standing in line is checking out actors/shows online doings.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
