Bernadette Peters led Hello, Dolly! which will run forever even after she leaves.

HELLO, DOLLY! will turn into another delicious show which will have a nice healthy run filled with 3-month stints featuring a roster of interesting stunt casting choices, like the 1998 Broadway revival of CABARET had as well as the early years of the CHICAGO revival.  Many actresses/actors who would LOVE to do the show but already are committed to TV or film projects so 3 months or less fits their schedules.

I do not know.  I think they are having trouble getting anyone to want to do it.  Bernadette as the first replacement after Bette?  Hmm.   Meh.

Maybe Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah will want to do the show then?

Maybe...

I think folks will be surprised by how quickly this enterprise runs out of steam.

Once the original cast starts departing, the dynamics and energy of the company begins to change.  It's inevitable.  I agree with HogansHero.

Ew.  This thread is disgusting.

Also, I'm pretty sure that Peters is only going to be in the show for a couple of months.  I know a lot of people that will be returning to the show to see her and a lot of people who weren't really interested, but now are.  She will sell just fine.  Her grosses won't be Bette level (at 2 million a week), but I suspect that she will bring in around a million a week.  As for Dolly Parton replacing her, it's not going to happen.  I know someone that works closely with her and her voice is apparently non-existent.  As for Queen Latifah, she's busy at the moment, but her schedule will clear up eventually and I wouldn't be shocked if she comes in after Peters.  Peters is a huge fan of the show and is virtually retired from the stage, so this might be the last chance to see her.

Well that is nice.  I know many people who booked airline tickets, booked hotels and made entire trips happen surrounding seeing Bette.   Most won't have any interest in seeing Bernadette and those who do might after a visit to the tkts booth on a slow day and their first and second choice isn't available.  Sorry if you don't like this thread.  But after months of speculation and the hope of this continuing as a event this announcement is kind of a dud.  The rest of your information is speculation at best.  Glad your friends are looking forward to it.

^It's just mean spirited and nasty.  You've known for quite some time that Bette would be leaving and it was a longtime rumor that Peters would be stepping in.  This was not a surprise.  Peters has her own dedicated group of fans.  She will sell just fine.  She will sell enough to keep the show open for a while.  Sorry that you're let down, but get over it.  Some of us are very happy about this announcement.

The rumors of Peters were as present as rumors of other people.  Peters will sell as well as she has before.  Which is just alright.  And I am over it.  I got to see it with Bette and Donna a few times and I am very happy.     I do hope Garber gets to show his own hair.  His white hair is gorgeous.  And I hate that awful wig DHP has.  I am glad you and your friends are happy.  Maybe you can get a extra big group discount.

Early years of Chicago?

the early years were Bebe and ute then bebe

roxie was Ann, Marilu, Ziemba

wasnt a roster of stunt casting  for the first couple years.

Billy was Naughton, Jbara, Naughton, Hinton Battle then Michael Berresse. Again not stunt casting.

Smokey pay some respect to Broadway's biggest theatre star. She'll turn out a better performance than Bette and who knows what the sales will be - but if the first few months of Follies are any indication, and if Donna can keep the show treading water, then perhaps with Bernadette (who is one of the few theatre stars with genuine name recognition outside a small group of dedicated theatre fans) it will be just fine. It is a slow time of year though.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
