Falsettos

Relieved to see somebody else post "Falsettos"...I am  a gay man of a certain age who lived through the AIDS crisis in the 80s and I was profoundly disappointed in a show I was so looking forward to finally seeing. I mean after all the rapturous talk about it etc. etc.… And people were crying around me and I was like "what?"   I almost found it like and "emperor's got new clothes" situation… You were not allowed to not like it. I didn't like it… It had its moments… The single most moving moment was when Andrew Rannells came out in silhouette hooked up to the IV....the recent production was certainly cleverly staged and Stephanie was Incredible but… I don't get the rapture about it at all. It was a C+ at best…I know I'm in the minority about this...

My takeaway from this thread is that the most overrated shows of the last 10 years are also the most notable shows of the last ten years.

BEAUTIFUL- for such a fascinating life, they truly turned it into something bland and repetitive. As if she was just some songwriter who sat in a room with her crazy husband for the better part of a decade.

GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE- other than the inspired idea to have one actor play the entire family, the score and book felt stale.

SPRING AWAKENING- other than the Deaf West take on it, I really don't understand the angst. The angst in Rent I get. The angst in Bare I get. This angst I do not understand.

Oh is this the thread where we diss shows that are popular, have run for years and that other people clearly love. Is this THAT thread?

Overrate: think too much of, attach too much importance to, praise too highly

...so yes

They often fall into categories:

1) Shows with a score that reflect "The Sound of Today" (but really don't)/or shows with terminal "hip" appeal: High Fidelity, Passing Strange, Next To Normal, American Idiot, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, If/Then, Holler If You Hear Me, Something Rotten, American Psycho

2) Pop catalog shows full of familiar songs linked to a book full of clichés/jukebox musicals: Million Dollar QuartetBeautiful the Carol King Musical

3) The "Chop & Drop" show that takes a famous source, keeps the title, makes no changes to the story, and replaces bits of dialogue with songs (or keeps pre-existing songs and adds inferior new ones): Legally Blonde, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, 9 to 5Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Ghost the Musical, Rocky the Musical, Newsies the Musical, Aladdin, Bullets Over Broadway, School of Rock, Waitress

4) The pop artist looking for credibility: Kinky Boots, The Last Ship

5) The mediocrity - OK across the board, but merely OK (at best): The Addams Family, Memphis, Honeymoon in Vegas, Bright Star

6) The atrocity, abominable in every way (not really over rated...): Glory Days, Wonderland, The People in the Picture, Spider Man Turn Off The Dark, Chaplin, Scandalous, It Shoulda Been You

I don't think this thread has been rated at all, over- or otherwise.

Spamalot.  I love the movie 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail', but Spamalot I hated and I couldn't understand what all fuss was about after it opened.

By saying overrated that could mean the show that got the most respect/glory/fame but don't believe that they deserve it, HAMILTON it's not terrible, buts it's not where near as deserving as it got last year, I have seen it 3 times I would know

Also Next to Normal, I saw it and I hated the score

The Great a Commit. All they did was change the theater besides that it's nothing special or new

finding never land, bland boring, nothing special or exiting

spring awakening, omg it's so boring ughhhhhh

Fun Home- amazing drama, really weak score for best musical(its best musical not best dramical)

Broadway better be more strict about allowing all these dramicals to play so often. The nerve!

It's a million dollar fine next time you try to bring your dramical to Broadway Tesori!

Stupid John Tiffany. Take some directing lessons before you stage a musical with nothing there!

I agree with most of the posts I have read here and their lists.  Overrated meaning disappointing because of the awards and attention the media has paid to certain shows is unfortunately inescapable.  We don't know if we like them until we see them and then it is too late to undo the ticket purchase or attendance.  It's all subjective, of course.  It just seems odd that so many people, myself included, list the same shows.  By the way, I know the post was for the last 10 years, but talk about OVERRATED, PHANTOM has been running for about 29 years and I am still shocked at how that is possible except for being on TDF pretty often until the momentum picks up again by tourists or someone who just doesn't know any better.  Although the list is pretty accurate, except for SOMETHING ROTTEN (myopinion, lots of fun) I cannot ever get over the fact that PHANTOM is still running. I was beyond bored and felt trapped in my seat which was first row Mezz.  My husband fell asleep and the only reason I stayed was because the tickets were a gift, and this was way long ago before PHANTOM was ever on TDF.  The last 10 years have had many disappointments with overrated shows, but in my mind nothing will ever surpass PHANTOM as a show I can't believe ever garnered so much positive attention in the first place.  Now 29 years later, one would think the word would have gotten around that the Phantom is only in the show for a short time compared to the length of the entire show.  Without that character, this show is awful!!  Now back to 10 years of overrated shows...my apologies for the rant...

It's not really that odd. There aren't that many musicals compared to other works of art and entertainment, and far fewer still that are highly popular and/or acclaimed. There's bound to be a lot of overlap in these lists.

My Name In Lights - That was kind of length just to say Phantom is overrated - lol.  If we are going back years, I will say that IMO "Chicago" is very overrated and amazed that people still go see it especially with their history of stunt casting. (exp. Christie Brinkley - lol !!)

Dear Evan Hansen- It's entertaining but the score is very weak and the entire show is relying too much on the book. Also, The characters aren't likeable.

American Idiot- Terrible. Just terrible
