I personally think it will- DEH has a solid fanbase, but Great Comet's more ambitious score will be honored here. Many times a show has won Best Musical, but lost Original Score:

1962: No Strings over How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying

1972: Follies over Two Gentleman Of Verona

1988: Into The Woods over The Phantom Of The Opera

1998: Ragtime over The Lion King

2002: Urinetown over Thoroughly Modern Millie

2005: Light In The Piazza over Spamalot

2009: Next To Normal over Billy Elliot

2014:  The Bridges Of Madison County over A Gentleman's Guide To Love And Murder

Think it can happen again this year?

I must say, while Dear Evan Hansen is tuneful and touching, Comet's score is absolutely phenomenal and incredibly innovative.  Malloy's use of Tolstoy's words and his wild, anachronistic music creates a brilliant techno-pop opera.  Plus, the mammoth size of that score should be awarded.

Even if DEH were to win score, Dave's fantastic orchestrations are sure to win.

Have to agree...the score to Great Comet was absolutely amazing!! and I would still choose DEH as best musical!

I sure hope it will! Dave Malloy has been releasing daily playlists of his inspiration for every song, and it's really amazing how he melded so many elements and different styles of music to make it as authentic as possible, and it paid off tremendously. Malloy has achieved something incredible with this score, and I truly believe he deserves this award.

I haven't seen the other nominees but I did see Great Comet yesterday and I cannot imagine anything from the other shows matching it's innovation, complexity and style. It's just breathtaking.

I thought the score to Great Comet was grating and thoroughly unmemorable. I thought the book was difficult to track. I still have no idea what that show was about. It perplexes me why this show is so successful.

The score to comet is the most exciting, complex and interesting well bodied one by far in competition this year. No One Else to the Duel to Letters to Great Comet of 1812.. just incredible.

I appreciate Great Comet, but I find the score to be meandering and lack any true drive.  I enjoy all three nominated scores more...

That being said, I agree that orchestrations should be a lock.

I personally prefer the DEAR EVAN HANSEN score, but Malloy's work should be rewarded. I'm hoping he takes the Best Orchestrations Tony. I enjoyed the score in the theater, but any time I've gone back to listen to it, it's a chore to get through.

Here are where I think it's gonna go down:

Dear Evan Hansen: Best Musical, Best Actor, Best Featured Actress

Come From Away: Best Book

Great Comet: Best Featured Actor, Best Original Score, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Directions, Best Orchestrations

So while I'd say Score is maybe the least "secure" for Comet of all of those predicted wins, I fully expect it to take it. It's dynamic, exciting, and importantly, very effective.

Pasek and Paul are having a moment right now, so I fully expect them to win Best Score. I do hope Dave Malloy at least wins Orchestrations, since it would be a shame for him to walk away empty-handed after three nominations on the same night.

I know this thread is about Best Score...but I really can't see Steele taking the Featured Actor Tony. I think he's honestly probably third, behind Creel and Rannells.

I don't know, I think if awards bodies really cared about who was having a moment, Lin would have won the Oscar this year.

The score for great Comet surely does feel more risky  and ambitious, so I hope it gets rewarded for that. Or I'd compare its loss to Matilda's loss for best score.

I'd be fine with DEH winning score, but with getting 12 nominations, I truly think Comet has a better chance at Best Musical then you think. I'd also personally just be heartbroken if DEH won Best Musical over Comet or Come From Away (or even Groundhog Day for that matter), so I'm willing to let it take Score so fans can be happy, but that's a discussion for another thread :)

I think Featured Actor in a Musical is more of a race between Gavin Creel and Lucas Steele. If Falsettos was still running, Andrew Rannells (and maybe Brandon Uranowitz) would probably be a lot more in the conversation.

Well, they're different awards with different voters, but La La Land was a favorite to win Best Picture and had the most nominations, which wasn't true of Moana. And I'm not saying that is the only reason why they'd win Best Score- the show's a big hit a lot of the score is good- but it certainly doesn't hurt them.

True but in the end La La Land didn't win Best Picture and significantly underperformed compared to its expectations. And Moana could never have been a big frontrunner with it being an animated movie. Supposedly, Lin had the most cheers at the nominees luncheon after Viola Davis, so I just feel like if that popularity couldn't translate into votes there than it probably wont here.

This isn't me saying DEH wont win, just that if it does I don't think it will be for that reason.

I know a lot of Tony voters, and everyone I've talked to so far seems to be on the Dear Evan Hansen train. Of course anything is possible, but I don't expect that June 11 will be a big night for Comet.

I hope not. It may be more ambitious than others but it's not all good. Some of it's great but most of it is meh. And so many lyrics are direct quotes from the book, which is cool at first but overused

Even if Comet loses musical, score and book, it is still a lock for most of the techs (if not all) and has a good chance at featured actor. It will be a big night for the show, regardless of if they win any of the three big awards.

So you're saying Comet won't win Best Musical?  I wish I could see the nominees this year.  I have only been able to listen to the scores and so far, Dear Evan Hansen is my least favorite of the top four nominees (or at least tied with Groundhog Day).  I'd probably enjoy it far more on stage.  I'm just curious as to why people are so crazy about it, other than for the its tragic teen appeal.  I've felt Comet has been the show to beat since it started previews on Broadway with Come From Away being its closest competitor for Best Musical.  To me, both shows really seem to have a leg up on creativity.
