I think Rocktopia is only technically "eligible" because it's a music-related show that's opening in a Broadway house. I doubt they're gunning for Tony Awards.

I know it’s not Disney, but I’ve been comparing Gavin Lee in Spongebob as this year’s “Genie/Featured Actor contender” since he has the big production number in the show that often gets the (well deserved) biggest audience response.

RE: Once On This Island Featured Actors

If any of the actors in OOTI were to get a featured nom, I would say the front running among them is 100% Kenita Miller. You don't appreciate that role until you see her play it. While all the Gods are good in it and surely will be considered, they are all very one note roles. Erzulie is good. Papa Ge is evil. And so on. Miller as Mama Euralie has a much broader range going on and it is SO well done. And the way she carries what she established in the first half as Euralie into the second half as her servant character in the hotel and the subtle but strong interaction she has with Ti Moune is great. I went in expecting to be wowed by the Gods but I came out being wowed by Mama Euralie.

With Tony Shaloub leaving The Band's Visit until May, I'm not sure he'll be nominated now. Shame because I loved his performance.

He'll for sure be nominated. Nominators have already been seeing the show. This won't effect it at all.

I agree that Kenita Miller should definitely be nominated. She’s heartbreaking and so touching as Mama Euralie. I think Lea Salonga is a worthy nominee as well. From her Filipino nurse in the pre-show through the rest of the show, she exudes warmth and care even when she’s not in the spotlight, always listening and quietly swaying the storytellers in the direction of “love.” I think “Ti Moune” and “The Human Heart” are the absolute knockouts in the show. Well, of course, “Mama Will Provide” gets the biggest ovation and it’s not hard to see why. I’d love to see Clint Ramos’s brilliant costume design recognized as well.

It's not like he was injured or something unexpected, so one imagines they already tried to get most of the Tony people in beforehand?

I don't know about Shalhoub. Unless he has already made such a strong impression within the minds of the nominating committee that they will be able to withstand new leading me on their way and return visits to see other leading actor contenders closer to the voting, I think this certainly will place his spot more on the bubble now then as a sure thing that it once was.

And having him back for "select performances" for the voting if he is nominated could work out to be hard to get everyone to see him in the role. Correct me if I am wrong but is there any rule about how you must see all the performances to be able to vote for that category? If so, should a voter be unable to attend one of those "select" performances he is in, then it would make them unable to vote in the category at all. Again I am working off a memory of someone mentioning this was a rule for Tonys in the past. Not sure if it still it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but no that isn't a rule. I don't think anyone was expecting Shalhoub to win, with Joshua Henry being the frontrunner (we'll find out tonight if he has it mostly in the bag), but the nomination seemed in the bag and I still believe it is.

There's such little competition in Best Lead Actor that Shalhoub is absolutely guaranteed a nom.

When David Hyde Pierce was sick during the Tony voting period last year, voters were offered to come back to a different performance. If Shalhoub is nominated, and I don't believe this will affect his shot at a nomination, I am sure voters who haven't already seen the show will be offered tickets to dates when he is in the show. Appearing in select performances starting in May, which is the Tony voting period...it adds up.

What's the competition like for Lead Actress in a Play this year?

Early reports from the Three Tall Women thread position Glenda Jackson as an extremely strong contender. And it seems like that's the only performance category that Angels in America doesn't have a stronghold.

Who else is a potential nominee? Condola Rashad in Saint Joan? Lauren Ridloff in CoaLG?

Uma Thurman, Elizabeth McGovern, Amy Schumer...anyone else (besides the ones already mentioned)?

I think it will ultimately be Condola Rashad vs. Glenda Jackson. Maybe Lauren Ridloff if Chidlren of a Lesser God takes off. Assuming Metcalf and Pill are moved into featured, I believe the only other two leading women are Lili Taylor and Janeane Garofolo.

I know that Harper is always a featured role but I think they could make a case to push Denise Gough for lead.

I am just now hearing about this. Did people know in advance that Tony Shaloub would be out for so long?? I have tickets for the beginning of April and am so incredibly disappointed that we won't get to see him. I would never have bought that date! Isn't this the sort of thing they'd know in advance and should be telling ticket-buyers?

Not really, since he's not above the title or anything. If he were out of the show, they wouldn't be offering refunds or anything...

Having seen everything thus far, including Mean Girls out of town, this is such a weak year for musicals.

My Fair Lady and Summer not-withstanding, of course...

Mean Girls and Band's Visit are the only two legit options for Best Musical, but both are flawed...

Lenk and Shaloub are clear frontrunners for Best Actor awards.  I liked Hailey Kilgore more, but Lenk is great.  Jessie Mueller isn't giving her best performance ever, but it will be nominated.  Ethan Slater deserves a nomination.

Supporting Actress has to be Mendez and the Mean Girls competing against each other...Merle Dandridge/Tamyra Gray were both amazing, too...

Supporting Actor is a real crapshow...fingers crossed for Norbert Leo Butz.

Now that we've seen Angels in America. Will Garfield be a lock for the Tony? Can Lane win or split the votes? Is there a chance that Lane goes featured? Opinions?

Lane should be featured. I'm surprised he's being considered co-lead at this point. It's an ensemble piece, yes, but Prior kind of holds it together. Andrew Garfield is doing that beautifully. The other actor that folks think may give Garfield a run for his money is Denzel Washington in The Iceman Cometh. I guess we'll know with the next few weeks.

Except in 1993 Ron Leibman won a Tony for Best Leading Actor as Roy Cohn and Stephen Spinella won Best Featured Actor as Prior and the next year Stephen Spinella won as Lead Actor as Prior so and Jeffrey Wright won as Belize so ...

With two separate productions I can understand Roy as a lead for MA, but this production is about the two shows and I don't think it's fair to say that Roy is a lead for Angels as a whole, he's not really there for Peretroiska in a way what Prior is there for both parts.

Washington is a previous winner that was snubbed in a baity role, I think he won't be much of a competition against Garfield tho. Garfield has a previous nom, an amazing performance, character and show.
