I keep hearing people say that they think Gideon Glick and Josh Groban will be nominated. I don't think the Nominating Committee will. Groban is serviceable but not a stand-out. Glick portrayed an annoying, pretentious young adult and wasn't likable to the many Industry people I have spoken with (not to fault the actor, but the role). I think there are others who can take the slots.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Forgive me if this has been explained, but James Lapine was nominated for Falsettos when it first appeared on Broadway. Can he be nominated again (even though he lost)?

I'm pretty sure that he was deemed eligible again.

He has been deemed eligible as he rethought the production and did not recreate. Personally, I think his work deserves a nomination.
It's a little too much time for me to do this whole list right now, but I'm almost sure of one thing. As much as Nathan Lane is loved and as great as he is in The Front Page, I think Danny DeVito in The Price is going to surprise us by winning. He gives a truly marvelous, funny, fresh...and this is his first time on Broadway?
If you can still see The Price I think you'll see what I mean. He stands toe to toe with Ruffalo, Shalhoub...the Tonys love a Cinderella story. (and he's certainly paid his dues).

Anything can happen, but I don't see Glick or Groban getting left off the list at all. I think the former is helped by the weakness of that category. As for Groban, he arguably got the best reviews out of the entire cast. His performance isn't a star turn, but his singing is beautiful and deeply felt, plus he's spoken frequently how humbled he is to be working on Broadway. I think he's endeared himself and would be truly surprised to see him not nominated.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
“Come From Away” and “Dear Evan Hansen” are in. After that, predict at your peril. I think “Groundhog Day” makes the cut, and probably “War Paint,” although “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812” is certainly in the mix. The category expands to five slots if a fifth show is within three votes of the fourth nominee. Those just mentioned will be the five — unless “Anastasia” snatches someone’s crown.
Yeah, it's Reidel, take it with a truck bed of salt. But are people legitimately starting to doubt that Great Comet will make it in? I don't see a universe where that happens.
I'm only doing the musicals because I've only seen two plays this year (Oh Hello and Play That Goes Wrong) so I'd be wildly guessing. (Though I am rooting for Dave Hearn to get a Featured Actor nomination as he had me crying laughing.) For the musicals, for bias' sake, I've seen Hello Dolly, Sunset Boulevard, Bandstand, Come From Away, DEH, Great Comet, and War Paint so far... Anastasia, Groundhog Day, and Miss Saigon in the next few weeks.
I'm predicting a few ties in this crowded and varied season.

Is it just me or does anyone think there's a (slight) chance Come From Away doesn't get nominated for Score? As much as the show seems all of a piece in the theater, that music and lyrics really don't come off well on the album, or on a second hearing (the nominators have been invited back to see the show again, as well as been given copies of the cast albums recorded so far). It's also fairly slight - apart from there not being any real stand-alone take-home songs the album is at least 50-60% dialogue, underscoring and instrumentals for the band like the exit music.
I think Pasek and Paul, Malloy and Minchin are givens. But considering the unmistakable craft of Ahrens & Flaherty and the regard they have in the industry, or the surprisingly fairly good reviews for Bandstand's score, or a serious new score from the authors of Grey Gardens, or the solid if workmanlike tunefulness of Alan Menken, etc. (or less likely, even the polarizing work for Charlie from the songwriters of one of the most successful musicals of the last 25 years, Hairspray)-- I just hesitantly wonder if there's a very slim chance that one of the other more substantial SCORES gets rewarded here - in place of the wispiness and (to some ears) sloppiness of the songs from Come From Away - a show that works in spite of the score, and definitely not because of it.
