It's such a shame to see the Imperial, Wilson, Marquis, Jacobs, and St. James all empty in the fall. Though I suppose none of the new musicals clambering for a theatre would want to play a fall limited run anyway.

The St. James isn't available at the moment.  It's being gutted for Frozen's arrival.  Technically it's sitting empty, but it's not like it's available to house a show at the moment.

Thanks for the shoutout, Concierge! I've updated the site with M. Butterfly's closing date -- wasn't aware of that until I saw your post! I think the only confirmed 2017-2018 production that hasn't announced a theater is The Minutes, so it's not on the site yet (previews start 2/6/1.

Great update on the theaters that could be vacant for spring. I, too, wish there were more new musicals this season.

Isn't the Imperial also getting a full renovation pre-Carousel? Thought that I read that somewhere, maybe here.

^^ I think people have been mistaking the fact that the Comet set needed to be struck as "a complete renovation"

Well the imperial is being completely transformed compared to how it was for great Comet, but I don't think it's a renovation on the scale of the lyric or st James theatres.

Not what I mean at all. I mean renovation,  as they’ve done recently with the Belasco, Booth, Schoenfeld, Jacobs, Golden, Longacre, etc. The Imperial was looking shabby, pre-Comet, and here is a period where it is off line for six months... a rarity for that theatre.

You're right though -- Broadway theaters rarely have such a huge stretch of time without a show. If they've got six months, they should at the very least redo the bathrooms and provide more stalls as has been the trend. The real trick comes with time -- they need to hire architects and engineers, make the drawings, file it with the department of buildings, then hire the contractors, and start the work. You'd be surprised how long and drawn out this can be sometimes. Once you touch a bathroom, you own it, and need to bring the whole thing up to the latest building code. With theaters having such ornate detail work as well, it can get very very tricky.

Really what I'm trying to get at is, if they are making changes, it's already in process. We just need someone to leak...

I'm psyched I already have my tickets to The Band's Visit...and for the very first preview, no less! Off-topic, but what's it like at a first preview? Are there usually interesting people in the audience?

I attended the first preview of Tarzan back in the day. The VP in charge of Disney Theatricals at the time spoke to the audience from the stage before the performance (first preview, technical glitches may happen, thanks for coming, etc.) There were no noticeable technical glitches, but the show itself was so boring I think my heart stopped at one point.

It's pretty much a guarantee that the creative team will all be there. Usually in the back, in my experience. Probably friends and family of the cast and crew, too. Other than that, probably not. It's not like opening night where they invite lots of celebrities.

KINKY BOOTS apparently has a name lined-up for the winter after Porter & Sands' return. So I doubt the Hirschfield opens up.

The Cort and the Hudson could conceivably host another production that would open in time before the Tony cutoff.

I have a friend working on M Butterly and he says that they aren't sure the show will make it to the New Year, so it might not make it until Feb. 

Also, I feel like Charlie closing means something is coming in, or why wouldn't the producers just keep the show open? Seems like they have deep pockets.

Update: I removed The Minutes from the list. It's really looking like it's not happening this season.

Any rumblings on anything else coming in the spring? We're getting close...

The February try-outs of Crazy For You revival in LA has been "postponed" (I'm guessing it'll eventually be a stop on a tour later on). They're casting for the workshop and a spring opening, so I'm guessing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is closing to make way for it.

It's coming and it's coming into the Cort.
