"I Must Get on That Ship" from TITANIC is the perfect opening number.
Unfortunately, though, it's not that show's opening number.

The circle of life! Too bad the rest of the show is abysmal.

To Build a Home from THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY.

Weaves a spell, captures a community, introduces the lead, and sets the perfect tone for the most gorgeous musical song cycle of this century.

"Good Morning Baltimore" from Hairspray has to be one of the most perfect opening numbers I've ever seen. It's joyous, introduces our leading lady and sets the perfect tone for the show.

I've also found the Preludium from "The Sound of Music" absolutely enchanting. The recording on the NBC Live! soundtrack is my absolute favorite. Haunting and beautiful.

Some of my other favorite openings include:

"Live in Living Color" from Catch Me If You Can
"Prologue" from Ragtime
"If You Knew My Story" from Bright Star
"Maybe" from Annie
"Jolly, Rich and Fat" from A Christmas Carol

The entire opening sequences from TITANIC and CAROLINE, OR CHANGE.

And from listening to the cast recording the past few years, I adore "Who Likes Christmas?" from How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

I hate the show, but I've always loved "Two Worlds" from Tarzan.
