Is Great Comet dead Tonys-wise? |
Perhaps. Although that was only one person who said that. So perhaps not. We'll see I guess.
There's a long time between now and the Tonys and a lot of Tony voters are fairly forgiving when a big hit is involved. We'll see!

He said "a few voters" which made me concerned this is already out of control and widespread. I just hate to see something that's already been resolved that really is a big fat nothing now get people all riled up months before voting.
I speculated that the lousy way the Kagans ignored their contract might hurt them come Tony time in another thread. Maybe with them backing down things might just be forgotten.
Riedel also implied that voters would turn on Hamilton because of all the hype. It's early in the season, it's hard to say.
Again, it's Riedel. The same man who said Hamilton was imploding from feuds before the transfer was announced.
Take a step back. Are there "a few voters" who would bad mouth Comet? You better believe it: just count the above the title producers in every other new musical that expects to be in contention. If Comet is better than the competition, it'll win the big prize. (No one would penalize the creatives on this account so that's not even on the table. And if it wins and Kagan accepts it, he will be booed and humiliated. That sounds like more fun than denying the show the award it deserves.

Riedel is a joke. Sad!
It seems stupid to punish the show and by proxy, Ars Nova because of this. After all, if the show wins any Tonys such as Best Musical etc, Ars Nova will be one of the recipients.

I agree, but this reads as a Donald Trump tweet, and I cannot stop laughing.

Except I can't think of any Tonys that Finding Neverland deserved...oops.

Cinders, that was my intent, hee!
And willep is right. Neverland deserved nothing, and people who continue to say it was "snubbed" for political reasons are still wrong. The strength of the spring showings will determine if and where Comet deserves nominations, but it's objectively a significantly better production than Neverland.
Carolee Carmelo deserves an award every time she so much as blinks, but like, Concierge is correct. It would be a much different story if the show was a better show in a less crowded season. But it wasn't.
Why did the drama desk and drama league awards feel that Finding Neverland and some of its actors deserved nominations then ? Their nominators are as equally as qualified to judge theather as the Tony's.
This does hurt the show, but they'll get some nominations. It also helps COME FROM AWAY & EVAN HANSEN.
Lots of people say "Matilda" lost the Tony for Best Musical because the RSC dangled the show and made promises to several producers before giving it to the Dodgers.
There is also speculation that "Nine" won best musical over "Dreamgirls" because that asshat Bernie Schoenfeld and the rest of the Shubert Organization were key players in getting many stunning theatres torn down to make room for the eyesore that is the Marriott Hotel.
Don't kid yourself, Tony voters remember .

Because fun home wasn't eligible.

Fun Home was eligible for Tonys in 2015 but the Drama Desk and Drama League in 2014, so that's part of it. Also, 4 shows were nominated for Best Musical at the Tonys while the DL nominated twice that number. And the DD Awards also have 6 nominees per category, but the Tonys have 5.
I'm not sure it's fair to say that the show is "dead Tony-wise" just yet. We'll see...but boy oh boy do I feel bad for Ars Nova, the investors, and the cast of GREAT COMET.
Riedel also tried to stir up a Tony voter revolt over the issue of their tickets. And as already demonstrated in this thread, losing a Tony is ALWAYS a conspiracy to fans of the show. Every single year. It's simply not interesting if a show loses because fewer voters felt it wasn't deserving. There needs to be a malicious agenda. Personally, I think one Riedel is more than enough.
@Cfried, walk us through that. Who are these Tony voters who will "remember" and who don't already have a reason to vote against the show? And why feel sorry for Ars NOva? They got what they asked for, and a heck of a lot of additional free publicity to boot.
@MM, totally agree.
@PT nothing that needs to be added. It's all sitting there as clear as day.
