A STAR IS BORN, CRAZY RICH ASIANS, and LA LA LAND were all budgeted at ~ $30 million with domestic grosses in the $150million+ range, and I would expect HEIGHTS to be similar. In addition to this being a property that could do very well financially and get awards attention, Warner Bros. is probably viewing this as an investment in one of the hottest content-creators of the moment (Lin-Manuel Miranda) and the director of their big summer hit (Jon Chu).

Re: BrodyFosse123's comment about auditions:  Those 4 sides could be their way of considering people for other roles in the film. Nobody knows who they're going to cast, and it certainly doesn't hurt the team to have an arsenal of talented "unknowns" from which they could draw –– for principal, supporting, or ensemble roles. Lin will surely have a lot of power in this production, and he seems to value talent.

this is the best musical number in the musical imo. it is so electrifying and the choreography is amazing. it is such a fun number. i know this musical number will look so much better on screen. it’s gonna be one of the highlights of the film for sure.

I also second Rita Moreno as Abuela and Jordan Fisher as Benny. I'd love to see either Lilla Crawford or Auli'i Cravalho in this, preferably as Nina. They're age appropriate, have the chops, and Lila has proved she can act.

I'm not sure Naya Rivera would look age appropriate as she's around 30, but I think she could be a great Vanessa.

this movie could potentially be one of the best movie musicals if they bring it to another level.

I really hope they cast plenty of Hispanics in these roles. Being Hispanic myself, i dislike when someone who can pass for Hispanic (Corbin Bleu, Jordin Sparks etc) can play the role meant for a Hispanic to play. I’m all for inclusivity, which is where the ensemble would come in. But sometimes it bothers me when an Asian American or African American can play a Hispanic role because they physically look like they can pass for it.

Edit: I don’t have anything against Corbin Bleu or Jordin Sparks lol. They were just examples. Arielle Jacobs also wasn’t Hispanic. I don’t hate any of them and I am a big fan of them. It’s just to get a point across. When I refer to Asian Americans, it also includes all parts of Asia as a continent.

Am I the only one who thinks Jaime Camil would make a wonderful Kevin Rosario. I wonder if America Ferrera will be involved- since she seems to be on good terms with Lin (Camila or someone else?).

you know America is 34 years old right? and Camila is a woman in her 50’s?

hamiltonboys said: "Pardon to interrupt the discussion about casting, but I'm just curious if Warner Bros is actually planning on the film turning a profit? I know Lin is really "in" right now, but In the Heights is not nearly as well-known as Hamilton is. They paid $50 million for the rights, and I don't see the production budget coming in at any less than $70 million. The film would need to make more than $300 million at the box office to break even.

Then again, most of Warner Bros. recent musical films have been flops at the box office, so maybe they don't care? I'm glad the film is being made either way.

WB has had a hugely profitable year. What are you talking about?

I could not have asked for a better dream casting. Patience Y Faith should be a good showcase for Rita

Jennifer Lopez is a global superstar plus generates great box office even in terrible films. Heck, Jane Fonda ended her 15 year retirement to work with Lopez (in MONSTER-IN-LAW) and hasn’t stopped working since. Lopez also is extensively connected to Lin-Manuel Miranda, just like Rita Moreno, so I say it’s safe to assume all arrows point to Lopez as Daniela.

Weird situation. Maybe this response could be a negotiation tactic by Moreno's agents?

"A studio publicist confirmed negotiations were under way when initially contacted by THR. But the studio subsequently said an offer had been extended. It is not clear whether that offer lapsed or was declined. Reps for the actress, who is represented by Innovative Artists, said there is no offer under discussion and no talks or negotiations are taking place."

Edit: It could also be that she's not available if it conflicts with One Day At A Time. If ITH wants to stick with a June 2020 release date, they'll have to start filming this spring/summer.

I could be wrong, but this smells of a negotiation tactic. An offer was out, it didn't go through and now one side is publicly saying she's not attached. Seems like someone is angling for a better offer.
