Performers are almost always performing the day of the Tonys and then get ready and are rushed to the ceremony.

In fact, it is one of the few times that you are most likely to see the performer. They can't really call in sick, then show up full glam to the Tonys ![]()

Haha that's true! Thank you, this is all making me feel much better about going
Javier Muñoz will be playing Alexander Hamilton on Tony Sunday matinee. It's listed on the official website.

I thought LMM didn't do Sunday shows in general.

It changes from time to time....originally, LMM was scheduled to perform. It was changed a little while ago, maybe a month? (don't really remember when)
Honestly I would be more worried if you had tickets for the week after - that is when half of the cast will be gone.

Leading up to the Tony Awards they try to be there often (it looks good and they want people to see them perform) so they become exhausted. People also tend to get really sick from all the mingling around the season. I think the most memorable example is Idina who basically had enough drugs for a horse in her just so she could perform one song.
I think it's absolute bull**** that LMM was supposed to perform then changed his schedule to include being out that day. I am certain nearly every other nominee will be performing in their show that day, so what makes LMM so special?

This is an exaggeration of extremes.

It's been explicitly clear on the show's website for MONTHS now that he won't be performing that day. It's their discretion—who are you to butt in and ask why?

He has always had an alternate for one performance a week, why does it matter which performance it is? As the sole writer and main performer in the biggest show, he will have a lot more to do than most on Tony day and I'm sure he wants to be as well rested as possible in order for him to be in the show on Tuesday, which will likely be one of the best performances the show does.
You all are always the first to say every year that Tony day is the biggest day of performance for casts, and that almost never are there alternates or understudies on. But when it pertains to Hamilton...?

Almost never does not mean never? I'd argue that the Tuesday following the Tonys is the biggest performance day for shows that won, if by 'biggest' you mean the one with the best atmosphere and most excitement etc.

Everybody here is talking about performers potentially skipping their shows under the guise of sickness/illness when they're really spending the day getting ready for the awards. Lin's decision here is not surreptitious—he's being as transparent and clear about his absences as he possibly can in advance. It's two completely different conversations.
The scheduled performance for Javier to go on as Lin's alternate switched back to Sunday matinees as of May 29 and is set to be that way until July 3. So it's not like he just decided to change June 12 only.
I'm taking my sister to see Hamilton on June 12 and I'm thrilled to see Javier, having already seen Lin. I'm also excited for the energy of Tony Sunday!
I saw The Visit last year on Tony Day and everyone in that company wasn't in too much of a hurry and almost everyone came out with the exception of Chita.
I saw Hamilton yesterday, and Javi was on as Hamilton and was absolutely incredible, so you will not be at all disappointed to see his performance. I also saw Austin Smith as Burr and he was also fantastic.

I don't know who's saying Tony day is the BIGGEST performance of the year. But usually all the performers are in. Has anyone ever given an actor shade for NOT performing that day? Not that I can remember, so I don't see what the big deal is.
As to Lin having MORE to do on this day then other actor's? Well, that's hogwash. He isn't writing the show anymore, he isn't preparing it anymore. That's the day he chose to not perform, NOT A BIG DEAL. (No matter WHO it is.)

I think it's the rush of seeing a show that's nominated on the day of which they may or may not win the Tony. I don't think anyone expects it to be the biggest, best performance, but it's just a really cool feeling to be seeing the show the day of the Tonys. I'm sure the performers aren't giving any less than usual, so it's just (at least to me) the feeling of it all.

This statement is not always true. There have been several cases where performers do not perform but still attend the Tony's. One pretty well known one is Sara Ramirez in Spamalot. She was at the Tony's.
Not to derail the thread, but if there's any performance that a lot of performers are likely to be out, it's the performances around the Fourth of July. I seem to remember reading a post here somewhere where someone went to see a show on Fourth of July weekend and five of the six principals had understudies go on for them that performance. He later found out all the principals attended a barbecue party that day.
