Every time I see a post, or article, or pic of Justin Trudeau I find another reason to admire him. This is a photo of him helping a handicap-able person in a wheelchair down an escalator/staircase.

Our favo(u)rite and friendly neighbo(u)rhood PM is now a Rolling Stone cover boy. Kind sensed it was going to happen to him given his rapidly-increasing popularity worldwide:

The Justin Trudeau Thread

http://people.com/politics/rolling-stone-justin-trudeau-cover-reactions/

But I must freely admit there are some flaws in the cover piece. For examples, it calls the RCMP simply as the Mountain Police. Also would this positioning of him as the anti-Trump could jeopardize the NAFTA negotiations? (Doubt it) It's not the Liberty Party but LIBERAL Party. His National Defense Minister's last name is not spelled with a hyphen (Sajjan). But these are likely printing/tech mistakes. We must bear in mind that this cover piece is primarily aimed at us Americans who largely--and sadly--don't think much about Canada in their worldviews despite being good friends and could use a basic layman primer on the political scene and thus use him for an introduction piece. For years, I read MacLean's, Canada's equivalent to Time, Newsweek, and US News and World Report and learn some things about it. But how many of us take it upon ourselves and go beyond the mainstream surface (Justin Trudeau included) and regularly follow Canadian (and other non-American) media and the issues, histories, trends, and pop culture scene to get to know? Not many for many of us lack the essential mass curiousity or regular habit--must never be fleeting. We seem to know more about him in near 2 years in office rather than his legendary dad Pierre Elliott Trudeau who also served as PM and a Liberal for 15 years (1968-1979, 1980-84) and caused a stir in his time in office, largely national. I would love to live in Canada down the road very soon. Maybe next year with college. No doubt he's good looking. Mind you, not every single Canadian is behind him 100% in a multiparty democracy Canada has--something we should strive for south of the border with more Greens, Socialists, Social Democrats, Libertarians, and even Communists in Congress (in both houses) for example along with Ds and Rs. But I digress. There's a lot we need to learn from the Canadians, even if they happen to have more of a Westminster-style of running things at the federal, local, and provincial level. Without further adieu, this is the Rolling Stone cover story:

Thank you--belatedly--Sabrelady!

Writing to you today on the day of the 2019 Canadian federal elections. I'm watching the live CBC News Network streaming of the Election Canada new, although I could head to CTV News or Global--and sporting a red Nike Canada Basketball longsleeve T-shirt as I'm writing this for the occasion. Yeah, I'm a Canada geek despite being an American! Polls are officially closed in Newfoundland-Labrador with the rest of the Atlantic Canada provinces' polls--Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick--close to closing as I write this. He's currently in the fight of his national political life to ave his PMship running neck and neck against Conservative leader Andrew Scheer. This election seems more about rhetoric rather than pledges. We could possibly see a minority majority in the House of Commons in Ottawa's Parliament Hill when this is done tonight with neither the two major parties--Liberals and Conservatives--reaching the 170 seats claimed for a majority out of 338 and somewhere above the 38.5%. Personally, I hope for significant gains for both the NDP and the Greens in seats--and ousting Maxime Bernier of the People's Party of Canada. Election results are becoming too close to call.  If you know your Canadian history, his legendary dad Pierre Elliot faced a sophomore campaign run in 1972 that's remarkably similar to what Justin is dealing with in some ways.

Must say that Justin Trudeau has been in his four years as PM has been somewhat disappointing a bit to me despite his global charm like scrapping preportional elections, and not talking and doing enough on the Indigenous issues. Canada as a soft power brand, however, has never been better with its pop stars like Drake, Alessia Cara, Shania Twain, Ryan Reynolds, The Weeknd, Shawn Mendes, Seth Rogan, and Justin Bieber all conquering, The Toronto Raptors won the NBA title and MLSE bro Toronto FC won the MLS Cup, bringing in and welcoming immigrants, sending peacekeeping troops, . Still like the guy but I, platform-wise, am more like Jagmeet Singh and Elizabeth May in my tastes, although I do like some Liberals. Still learning about the Liberal MPs. Trudeau is in Montreal right now with family watching the election results.

Back into this after some time away for multiple reasons. But am back for very important reason.

You see, Trudeau called for an additional national federal election that's coming this Monday, as is the tradition for all Canadian federal elections to be held. Why call them TWO YEAR AFTER the previous one? Apparently with maintaining a minority House of Common government and not a Liberal majority there and how several provinces subsequently went with the Liberals, Right now Justin is nationally running neck and neck with Conservative Party leader Erin O'Toole (a guy, I must point out), who is gaining appeal with older voters and non-traditional bases. Also must point out, he's actually more liberal in his stances that are pro-LGBTQ+ and pro-abortion inside his party than our Republicans. What might hurt O'Toole right now is fellow Conservative and Alberta Premier Andy Kenney and his state of the emergency declaration within the oil-rich province due to rising COVID cases inside the province as ICUs are rapidly filing up in Alberta's hospitals. Now Alberta (for us Americans, at least) is a traditionally Conservative/Tory province like with Saskatchewan and more rural with Edmonton (the capital), Calgary, Lethbridge, and Red Deer. O'Toole didn't publicly acknowledge him in recent days. That and the fact the libertarian People's Party of Canada is biting at their heels for some seats. Also O'Toole proposes a far lesser carbon tax than Trudeau's.

All this during a coronavirus and the national soul-searching stemming from the indigenous Canadian bodies buried at schools, many of them religious, designed to civilize them many decades ago. You would think they would be front and center with the need for reconciliation. But they're fully not. The former more likely than the latter. Recovery from COVID-19 is in a delicate spot presently with the fourth wave with Delta coming forth from the unvaccinated leaving scars and fatigue. May have to extend them the funding. The NDP is making some inroads with the charismatic, popular, and well-liked Jagmeet Singh. I wish he would be neck and neck with Trudeau and the Green's Annamie Paul, but that Westminster "first past the post" Commonwealth-style political structure prevents them from doing so. But Singh could eventually end up acting as a kingmaker if the NDP earns enough seats for consideration on that. Desperate Trudeau is now appealing for progressives to side with the Liberals to prevent the Conservatives winning the majority. Not to mention the vocal, vicious, and sometime profane backlash and rhetoric from some Canadians amplified from anxiety, anger, frustration and powerlessness and over how he and his fellow Liberals handles the pandemic wherever he campaigns--and thus won't vote for him. It would be excellent to see Canada have for the first time a PM of color in Singh or Annamie Paul, the first Black person fronting a national party in Canada with the Greens, to continue showing the world how progressive it continues to be and embracing its multiculturalism--even more so in key ways than us Americans ever have even with Obama and Harris, despite being far more multiethnic. But it's a while off for Canada.

I'll return Monday to write more when the election hits and may make some corrections. But take a look from the CBC over how the 6 different Canadian political parties propose and handle the 19 issues impacting the nation with analysis from CBC News journalists:

Currently watching the CBC News' live presentation of Canada Votes 2021 on You Tube, although I can also check--and still can--visit Global's and CTV News's live Election Night presentations. My prediction: I think, like with many of the Canadian political pundits and prognisticators, that Justin Trudeau and the Liberals will endure another minority government with the majority of seats in the House of Commons in Ottawa while losing a few riding seats, but he will maintain his PM job as we get to see what a post-pandemic Canada will resemble. Polls are closed in Atlantic Canada with Quebec and much of Ontario becoming the case as of this writing. Liberals presently have a considerable projected lead with the seats and won ridings right now but the Conservatives are taking some Atlantic Canada ridings. Will return very soon with my thoughts when the dust settles.

Justin and the Liberals got 159 MP seat in the House of Commons, 4 more than what previously had two years ago, and the majority of seats. But still short of the desired 170 majority of seats needed. So he'll nevertheless stay on as PM despite not winning the popular vote. Erin O'Toole and the Conservatives got 121 and the majority of votes. Bloc Quebecois and its leader Yves-Francois Blanchet remained at 33, all from Quebec. Jagmeet Singh and the New Democratic Party gained a seat to make it 25 for the social democratic party while the Greens remained at just 2.

Quite possible the Liberals and the NDP will come together in forming a coalition government. But lots of Canadians across the nation were all wondering, both aloud and quietly, was this snap election truly necessary? Was there ever a need? I would say no myself, even as an American. Trudeau, I think like a lot of Canadians, performed a solid job managing over the pandemic in Canada even after some serious scandals hit him like SNC Lavaille. Could it be better? Yes. Trudeau should've left this alone and ride out the term.

Meanwhile, Annamie Paul resigns today as Green Party of Canada leader after a disappointing performance in the federal election. Her term as leader was marred by political infighting and policy disputes and not wanting to undergo a fractuous postelection review. She tried to make the Green Party of Canada more diverse and reflective of contemporary Canada after taking leadership from Elizabeth May. Paul also lost her chance to gain a seat in the Toronto Centre riding--and seemingly set up institutionally for failure:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/annamie-paul-stepping-down-green-leader-1.6190793?cmp=FEED_BEING_BLACK_IN_CANADA_popularnow_1

I'm writing this today on a new national holiday in Canada called National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, which marks on reflection of the tragic and horrific abuse of Canada's Indigenous people. Like the kids who survived or died in those residential schools and the communities affected by them. These situations do leave behind long lasting legacies. Let's use this time to "own their truth", learn their histories, uncomfortable truths, and tragic perspectives, listen, and strive for social equality, fight racism and support them, among other things, in working to heal.

Time now to take a sports excursion in this Justin Trudeau thread.

Our friendly neighbo(u)rhood Canadian PM took time out in Edmonton, Alberta this past November to happily meet the Canadian men's national soccer while practicing indoors at the Edmonton Soccer Dome/Commonwealth Field House on the eve of their major CONCACAF World Cup qualifier match against Mexico (aka El Tri) at Commonwealth Stadium the next night, one of the most important matches in Canadian soccer history. Coach John Herdman did joke that Katy Perry would stop by instead, something that Justin shared. While in town to unveil his federal child care plan and deal with Alberta's government and hopping on the soccer bandwagon, Trudeau, wearing a black mask, said he was "excited" and offered the team words of encouragement and telling them to keep "making all Canadians proud" with their successful play (they and Trudeau applauded) with "millions of Canadians watching tomorrow night" while Team Canada presented him with their team-autographed red Nike jersey with Trudeau's name and the #22 on the back and conducted photos with him. Telling them "they got this". Well, they took on Mexico and shockingly beat them 2-1 with Cyle Larin scoring two goals to Canadian soccer fans' delight to ultimately go atop the CONCACAF Octagonal final stage standings to stay as they gave Mexico to play under worst possible conditions:

https://indianexpress.com/article/trending/trending-globally/justin-trudeau-meets-canada-national-soccer-team-7625906/

By the way, the weather up in Edmonton was typical mid-November weather with lots of snow under 19 degrees F/-9 degrees C with a -14 C, 10-15km/h wind chill at 7pm Canada MT gametime over 44,212 watching. Dubbing Commonwealth Stadium as the Iceteca with a sea of red in a riposte to Mexico City's longtime intimidating Azteca Stadium. More like hockey weather. Will go down in Canadian soccer lore. Trudeau hopes Mexican President Andreas Manuel Lopez Obrador would him Trudeau for gloating after the "major" win, although he's primarily known for being a hockey fan:

That certainly helped pave the way for Canada finally making it back to the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 36 years (1986, until now its only appearance then for Canada in Mexico, didn't score a goal or advanced then in its debut against France, the Soviet Union, and Hungary in group play). And the Canadians did "get this". Clinched its 2022 Qatar World Cup berth at home in Toronto against Jamaica's Reggae Boyz at a cold BMO Field in March (along with the USA and Mexico directly from CONCACAF). And yes, Trudeau did extend his proud congratulations upon qualifying on Twitter:

Happily taking a group selfie with the Canadian women's soccer team and Sports and Disabilities Minister Carla Qualthrough at Ottawa's Parliament Hill prior to Rio 2016 in June 2016--and saluting star Christine Sinclair for her leadership:

https://toronto.citynews.ca/2021/08/06/canada-womens-soccer-gold-medal-tokyo/

On a more recent but sobering note, Justin Trudeau also paid tribute to and send condolences on one of his sports heroes from his youth in heavily decorated Montreal Canadiens legend and 4x Stanley Cup winner Guy LaFleur, aka The Flower and the Blonde Demon, who died almost three weeks ago at the age of 70 from lung cancer. Did attend today's funeral for Guy:

Trudeau hails from Montreal after all, where in sports it's Canadiens hockey all the way, and is a bonafide Habs fan. Wait, you're expecting him to be an Ottawa Senators fan, one of my favo(u)rite NHL teams?

We're happily counting down to the minutes to see Canada's first World Cup game for the men against Belgium's highly touted and talented but older Red Devils today for the first time since 1986 when they played in a group with France, the Soviet Union, and Hungary in Mexico. The 1986 Canada side held their own in their debut then against these teams but walked away with 3 losses and no goals...and we all should know what happens to teams who don't score WC goals in their debuts. They don't immediately come back from that for a long time (see also Australia, Greece, and China). Game is on live at 1pm Canada/USA/Mexico CT on CTV and TSN (and RDS, for the French) from Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium at Al Rayyan, Qatar with a 3-hour long preview beforehand and live on FOX here in the USA. There have been some key injuries for Canada but star Alphonso Davies is ready and excited to play in his World Cup debut. I firmly believe that Canada's going to happily surprise some people. Bought some Canada Soccer Nike gear online and will continue to do so!

But that's not you come for, huh? You come to see how your PM, the Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, is revving to go with this come kickoff! #WECAN

Proof positive that Justin Trudeau is checking out and cheering on Canada's first World Cup game performance in 36 years against Belgium on TV. Inside the government lobby of the House of Commons’ West Block in Ottawa, Ontario. As I write this, Canada is down 1-0 but had plenty of opportunities to shockingly make it 3-0 in Canada's favor right now. He's the only person sporting a mask here.
