I'm hoping this is OK to ask... my husband and I are both teachers and with summer vacation coming I was thinking about joining TDF since we both love Broadway and try to check out at least a couple of shows over the summer.
A couple of questions:
What are the prices usually like for TDF tickets? Trying to decide if it's worth the initial investment for us...
We're about 3 hours away, are the tickets usually totally last minute or would we have time to get child care arranged?
Would you think it's worth it for just using it a few weeks out of the year?
Prices vary depending on what you are seeing. Generally speaking, Broadway musicals are $49 per ticket, while Broadway plays are $43 per ticket. Off-Broadway usually ranges from roughly $19-$34 per ticket depending on the size of the venue.
While there are rare occasions where shows will post a last minute offer, it is most common for tickets to be put out a week in advance. However, the box office can list tickets on any weekday, so there is no rule as to how far in advance things are posted. It is common to see the the highest amount of offers go up on Monday or Tuesday, as box offices are looking at the sales for the week and decide then what days need TDF.
I simply don't have the funds to pay for full price broadway tickets nowadays (well, if I want to see a bunch of shows in the season anyway) so TDF is an essential purchase for me. One thing you should consider is that weekdays are listed more often than weekend performances, at least for Broadway. So if it is impossible for you to attend on weeknights, you may not find the same worth as others do.

i think they usually discount membership in june so maybe consider waiting until saturday?
Does anyone know why Chicago never pops up on TDF? As a long running show that isn’t playing at anywhere close to its maximum gross I’d think it would be up there all the time but I’ve never seen it.
I just had an urge to see it again after watching Fosse/Verdon and was curious.

Probably because if it did pop up, none of us TDF people would ever see it for retail (not that we're seeing it often, but I did promise to bring my teenager at some point).

The Weisslers are too proud to see their shows on TDF. Same reason why you’ll never see Waitress up either

There actually was a few months a year or two ago where Chicago showed up for the first time ever, so it HAS been on but as far as I know, the handful of dates was all it has ever showed up for.
Chicago tends to do very good business at the TKTS booth, where tickets can be sold for higher prices than TDF. It's a property that is a known quantity to tourists, so last minute ticket sales are always a possibility. So it makes sense that the producers aren't too keen on using TDF.

What are the odds the Into the Woods benefit concert with Alice Ripley gets put on here? It's not selling well but I'm not sure if events like this ever even pop up on TDF. Anyone have any ideas?

Town Hall does put up events on TDF sometimes, the Broadway By the Year show is up right now. It's always a crapshoot as to whether something pops up or not, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it if advanced sales are bad.
I have a friend coming to the city and we want to see a show on Tuesday, July 2nd. I'm new to TDF and I know it will be a holiday week; do you think it's unwise to rely on TDF to see something? The shows she said she wants to see if I see them come up are:
-Oklahoma -Burn This -Frankie & Johnny -Come From Away

I haven't seen Come From Away on there in a long time. Oklahoma and Burn This have been on here and there so if you're willing to wait there might be a chance but I can't say I would rely on it. Frankie and Johnny should be on there since it's not doing well sales wise but at the rate they are going the show might even be closed by then.
