That's awesome. I'm sure there'll be some idiotic backlash, but I'm so glad it happened.

I feel like the actors playing Harry and Ron should be reversed.

It puts the racism of Hermoine being called a "mud blood" front and center.

Jamie Parker is a solid actor, I recently saw Noma Dumezweni in Linda at the Royal Court and she was brilliant, she replaced Kim Cattrall who had dropped out in rehearsals.

I agree that the actors playing Ron and Harry should be switched.

I am beyond thrilled that a black woman is playing Hermione. It's genius!

musicaljen or whatever her new screenname is must be having a stroke right about now

The thing is, besides being an utter toad of a human being, Riedel usually has the least knowledge of the topic in the room. He doesn't usually understand the content or approach of a show, and is always completely and unfailingly socially ignorant, which makes it really infuriating when Susan can't get a word in edgewise. A definitive mansplainer; it's always painful when he has female guests. I watch the show sporadically when I really want to see a guest, because it's the only theatre talkshow we have, but it would be so much better without this hateful clown in a dadcoat. Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Definitely switch the Ron and Harry casting -- or give them each wigs of the correct color. I can't imagine Ron looking that way in his later years. Of  course, the casting of an actor as Hermione who looks NOTHING like Emma Watson telegraphs to the audience that this story is not necessarily connected to the others.

Audrey, the Phantom Phanatic, who nonetheless would rather be Jean Valjean, who knew how to make lemonade out of lemons.

Considering that this entire world was built upon the book series and that those books are wildly popular, I don't think letting go of the image of Emma Watson as Hermione will be a problem. Fans are eager for the next chapter in the story; they know this isn't an extension of the films.

YAY for the best person at the audition to get the role.

She didn't get the role because of her color I hope.

I saw Dumezweni in A Human Being Died That Night at BAM and she was terrific. What a great choice for the role!

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

It's hilarious to me that in the same breath, people praise the colorblind casting of Hermione but say Ron and Harry should switch because of how they look...  that's so stupid.

"Definitely switch the Ron and Harry casting -- or give them each wigs of the correct color."

If only wigs were a possibility in the theatre...  if only... *eyeroll*

Jamie Parker is an excellent actor.  In fact, I scheduled one of my trips to London around seeing him in and Sam Barnett in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.  He is an inspired choice for adult Harry Potter.

This is so very exciting and fits in with the canon that many people saw for years - black Hermione has been around for years on tumblr and fansites.

for those who have trouble reading: "Hermione's white face was sticking out from behind a tree"

Please do note that white could mean 'pale' here, since the next line indicates that she was rather nervous.

That's a big thing from racist old movies that black people are scared white.  Also, their eyes bug out.

No, every person in the world turns pale when scared.

Can you please STOP with turning everything into racism.

On topic: Just be glad that a great actress got the part of Hermione. Just as you should be equally glad if any other actress would have gotten the part (if they were the best of course).

That's absolutely what it means. C'mon. Context.
