Is it bad that Newsies is my favorite musical because it's a Disney on Broadway show? It changed my life and helped my depression tremendously, but whenever I say newsies is my favorite musical, I feel like people don't think I'm a real theatre fan, even though I am.

Why care what any one else thinks?

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Newsies is a popular show. It's not like your favorite musicals are Tarzan or The Little Mermaid.

My first musical, and one of my favorites, was The Lion King. I have seen close to 150 shows since on Broadway, tour, and regional, and I still see The Lion King whenever its near a place I am located. Disney on.

Don't be ashamed! Beauty and the Beast still has a firm place in my top favorites.

Mary poppins was my first show I saw that was actually on Broadway. It still has a special place on my heart.

And I remember this musical I remember their brilliance And I might never sleep again...

no it's not bad. as Dramamama said, who cares what other people think? smiley

The thing is, besides being an utter toad of a human being, Riedel usually has the least knowledge of the topic in the room. He doesn't usually understand the content or approach of a show, and is always completely and unfailingly socially ignorant, which makes it really infuriating when Susan can't get a word in edgewise. A definitive mansplainer; it's always painful when he has female guests. I watch the show sporadically when I really want to see a guest, because it's the only theatre talkshow we have, but it would be so much better without this hateful clown in a dadcoat. No, I think Newsies is Disney's best Broadway show by a long shot!

You're fine! Newsies is amazing -- my favorite show too! And The Lion King is still amongst my favorites.

I love Newsies, it's great show (and I listen to the OBC recording often). And Beauty and The Beast is one of my all time favorites.

It seems to me that the nature of your question is: "Is it okay to like a Disney show because Disney is so often criticized for buying out Broadway theaters, making Broadway less diverse, less original, etc?"

The answer yes, it is okay to enjoy and even love a Disney show on Broadway. There is a place for Disney on Broadway, so long as it is not the only type of show that gets a place on Broadway. So feel free to love Disney musicals while also being mindful that most of us lovers of theatre want Broadway to remain diverse and provide stages for original or lesser-known work alongside the popular Disney tentpoles.

@asmith0307- Your "Disney on" comment made me smile.

And as others have said, "Newsies" is a pretty popular show. But whether a show is popular or not, if you enjoy it then don't worry about what other people think.  If people seem skeptical, maybe they have not seen the stage version? And if not-- just point out that the show won for best score and best choreography.  That should help support your case for it being a great show smiley
