Are they THAT confident that zero changes will be made to the score? I'd also want the actors to have played the roles for a bit to better preserve a more accurate record of what they're doing 8 times a week.
I feel like ALW likes releasing his recordings by the early part of performances. And I guess that was what those concerts/workshops were for in terms of changes...
It's still pretty much the norm for things to change in previews, especially since there's no out of town. Numbers often are great in workshops but thud in front of audiences. Lyrics are tweaked and changed constantly at least!
ALW has a history of releasing tracks from shows to promote them, but this just seems strange and I'm sure things will be different.
It's not unprecedented for a show to record the cast album before opening on Broadway. Spring Awakening's cast album was recorded between the downtown run and the transfer to Broadway. The lyrics for a few of the songs are drastically different. The Song of Purple Summer is barely recognizable to what is performed on stage. Hairspray's cast album was recorded during previews and is also different from the stage version in a few ways. Cast Albums are usually different from the stage performances anyway, because they are releasing a musical recording, not the musical itself, so they need to tailor it to a listening only audience and the Grammy committee.
ALW did this with Love Never Dies and Stephen Ward... the recordings were released right before the first/opening performances. Hairspray is another example of a show that had a recording ready before/during previews... and things change, of course, as the show develops. But I, personally, would more than likely buy a recording early on during the run if it was available, regardless of changes made later in the process. It'd make good money that way if people are into the music or the show.
I prefer it when they wait and record after opening. There are undoubtedly changes that will be made that won't be preserved now. I personally find it irritating to listen to songs that I know are performed differently on stage. The Spring Awakening cast album mentioned above is a perfect example.
Beauty and the Beast really got me. I love the Original Broadway Cast Recording the way it is. When I saw the tour, I was like "the set looks cheap and they even screwed with the LYRICS!?" I found out later.

you saw the NETworks tour I'm guessing? lol. yeah that set looked awful. not to mention the costumes.
The thing is, besides being an utter toad of a human being, Riedel usually has the least knowledge of the topic in the room. He doesn't usually understand the content or approach of a show, and is always completely and unfailingly socially ignorant, which makes it really infuriating when Susan can't get a word in edgewise. A definitive mansplainer; it's always painful when he has female guests. I watch the show sporadically when I really want to see a guest, because it's the only theatre talkshow we have, but it would be so much better without this hateful clown in a dadcoat. (thanks ScaryWarhol)
Going back in time, Minnie's Boys contains songs dropped from the final show and ones in the show were not on it. Funny thing, I believe the album may have been done after the opening. The label that did this and Cry For All was Project 3 records and they disappeared after doing these 2.
From what I've read. He has composed 14 new songs for the show plus the three original songs from the movie. So it is more than eligible for a Tony nomination.
I honestly love the Hamilton score but from what I've heard of the School of Rock score so far, I am beyond excited to hear the final product and to hear those friggen talented kids.
Well, apparently they are recording the cast album this weekend. Which is shocking, seeing how they would've only had 4 weeks of full company rehearsals under their belt (5 for Alex, Sierra, and the kids who started the week prior). If they truly are recording this weekend, hopefully its a couple of songs and not the entire album. I hope this works out because I'm looking forward to this album.
