With recent ticket sales and the fact that the next person they are bringing in (Taye Diggs) isn't exactly that famous do you think Hedwig is gonna close before Taye is even supposed to end? I give it until the end of august unless they announce Neil is coming back (which i am almost 100 percent sure wont happen) or they bring in someone extremely famous. I mean Darren is extremely famous but i don't think lots of teenage girls moms want them seeing they show due to the subject matter.
Not that famous? Maybe not among Tweens but I think in the over-30 crowd he's more well known than several other hedwigs. (Particularly among those of us who grew up with Rent being the show that transformed Broadway for our generation.) I know a lot of people flying to New York especially to see him in Hedwig. Myself included. I promise it's entirely because he's a very, very talented actor and has nothing to do with the fact that I think he's one of the best looking men on the face of the earth. (Ok maybe a LITTLE bit of both.)
I could see it going either way. It is a small cast, so I'm sure the running cost isn't too bad. but it's also the kind of show that doesn't necessarily draw the mainstream audiences, and as it's already been running for over a year, many people who would see it, have already seen it at this point. It does have the smaller loyal audience that keep coming back to see the each new Hedwig (sometimes multiple times), but i'm not sure how long that can sustain the show if the tourist crowd is busy seeing this season's shows instead.
Also, as much as i love Darren, I'm not sure i'd classify him as extremely famous. More famous than your average broadway actor perhaps. He's nowhere near the level of famous that say, NPH is. It's a shame more people aren't going to see him in it though, he really is fantastic in it.
"Ive seen every hedwig and let me tell ya Darren is amazing it is very sad not as many people are seeing him"
I'm very glad to hear all the praise for him because I've bought tickets for to see him next month. I knew my dad would LOVE the show so I decided to add it on to our Hamilton trip. Really looking forward to seeing what Darren brings to it. But I'm still flying back for Taye!!! <3
Yes it will close. Just as Cats did and as Phantom will. But right now, even with diminished grosses, it is making its investors money every week, and as long as the producers can continue to engineer new Hedwigs who can maintain that, there is no reason to think it will close. when they are stumped trying to find a someone who can pull it off successfully, it will close.
Until we see what ticket sales are like for Taye, there is no objective way to anwer your question. --
I know I'm going back to see the show with him, and I have absolutely NO interest in seeing Criss.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Taye Diggs is so much more famous than Darren Criss. The only thing Darren ever did that made him famous was being a TV show that got pretty crappy and most people stopped watching long ago.
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
LOL Pinto, I am not always right, and if you read this board carefully, you will see that. But when I know I am right, it is because of facts, not because I like to pretend I am.
"People said A Chorus Line would "run forever" cuz it was super cheap to do. However.
"
I have to (somewhat) disagree. I believe that shows like Phantom and Lion King have become a staple of visiting New York and even in the slow weeks make the NYC economy money. Will they run forever and ever until the end of time? Probably not. But they ain't goin anywhere any time soon.
Hedwig will not close early. At least I don't think so.
The only "big" name so far has been NPH, we are talking the double whammy of Doogie Howser and Barney from HIMYM.
All the other Hedwigs (Rannels, Michael Hall, Darren Criss, JCM, and the upcoming Taye Diggs) are all known in some circles but nobody is some sure fire draw with proven Box office track record.
The "content" matter isn't keeping people away either , not on BW that keeps Kinky Boots and BOM going.
Quite frankly, the show isn't built for longevity, it's getting "old" like so many other shows past the year mark.
"when I’m on stage I see the abyss and have to overcome it by telling myself it’s only a play." - Helen Mirren
"As for Taye Diggs, I'm hoping that Hedwig will make him as well-known as his superstar ex, Idina Menzel."
I'm sure he'll do a fine job but I'm not sure being the 6th Hedwig for a few months a year and a half into the run will have much effect on his career one way or the other.
