Hi all,

Is the upcoming revival of The Color Purple going to be the first revival of a musical that premiered in the 2000's? I can't seem to find a show from the 2000's that has been revived yet, but I'd just like to be sure.

It will be (not counting return engagements of Holiday shows and Fela!).

cool observation and would love to see a trend of other 2000s musicals getting a revival including:

Aida

Hairspray

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

It's sad that this is getting a revival before so many other actually good musicals do.

I'm ready for a Grey Gardens revival starring Chenoweth and Menzel.

No, it didn't. The Last Five Years opened in Chicago (I think that's where the first production was?) in 2001 and Off-Broadway in 2002.

I've been really into Grey Gardens lately. But who else other than Christine Ebersole could play Edie/Edith?

It's not if you want to count a revival to a revival with La Cage Aux Folles

And I remember this musical I remember their brilliance And I might never sleep again...

I wonder if any of our resident archivists would be able to answer this question: is this the fastest (Broadway) turnaround of a revival that is wholly unrelated to the original production?

Not talking about GYPSYs or LA CAGEs which were new revivals closely-timed, nor the holiday musicals or the numerous shows that went out on tour and came back around (a la, recently, LES MIS, HAIR, FELA!)

Is this the quickest a Broadway musical premiered and then re-appeared in a wholly new production that surfaced again on Broadway?

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

^ I'm gonna say Sweeney Todd was a faster turnaround, with a broadway revival 9 years after the original production, in 1989?

hi musical boy-sweeney todd was an excellent guess so i looked it up

it opened in march 79 and the revival was in sept 89 so about 10.5 years between original open and revival

Purple opened in dec 2005 and plans december 2015 revival so between opens is exactly 10 years.

Purple didnt close until feb 2008 so less than eight years between production OBC close and revival open (perhaps a more interesting metric), where as Sweeney OBC ran about 15 months, so 9.5 years between production close and revival....

jnb9872, great observation and i cant think of or find another show with a quicker obc to revival...

It seems like the old "rule of thumb" for revivals was a minimum of 20 years and often revivals of big shows were 25 years or more after obc open.

Im hard pressed to think of any other revivals than opened less than 20 years after obc

Based on previous long OBC runs and popular revivals, very likely revivals we may soon on bway include:

Cats (in london ALW says its coming)

Beauty and the Beast (web chatter but disney is already creacking with lion king and alladin on bway)

Rent (announced in 2013 for winter 2015 but i havent seen more recent updates)

Miss Saigon(already in london, chatter says its coming)

Grease (if fox tv production goes well watch for the revival)

My Fair Lady (rumored for two years now through clive davis)

Well, if we're extending to 20 years, Into the Woods was revived 13 years after the original production closed.

I am suprised no one has mentioned the off-broadway revival of Rent which opened lPess than 3 years after the original production closed. Yea thst may not be Broadway to Broadway, but it was a truly commercial production at New World Stages, Stage1, just one seat shy of Broadway house.

ragtime opened on bway jan 1 1998 and revival opened nov 2009 so 10 years 8 mos between openings; it closed jan 16 2000 so 8 yrs 10 mos between close and revival....

so color purple still looks like fastest between openings and fastest from close to revival....

curious bilbo3 why you dont think there would be revival demand for Grease? one of best selling movie musicals of all time....

wow

completely forgot about the 2007 Grease revival!

Grease revival opened on August 19, 2007. Max Crumm and Laura Osnes were selected to portray Danny and Sandy via viewer votes cast during the run of the NBC reality series Grease: You're the One that I Want!. The original score includes four songs written for the film adaptation: "Hopelessly Devoted to You", "Sandy", "You're the One That I Want", and the title number. The Burger Palace Boys' name is the T-Birds in this revival. The production ended on January 4, 2009 after 31 previews and 554 performances.

Those are solid performance numbers for a revival, but dont know if it made money

The UK revival that opened in 2006 ran over 1100 performances and had a successsful national tour in the UK, and sounded very profitable...
