Alexandra Jacobs to pen Elaine Stritch biography... |
"I'm frantically spinning that as an advantage because I feel like most people who interacted with her had a very strong reaction to her ... Since I never met her in the flesh, I lack any bias."
The author will also lack perspective. I worked with Elaine Stritch. Some of the things she did are better understood when you've watched her in unguarded moments. She plainly makes it clear in "Shoot Me" that when she knows she's being watched, she's "on" and wants to "act." There's a point in the documentary, I think when she's in the kitchen, where she tells the cameraman "Keep the camera on me, I want you to follow me." That's what you get if you haven't interacted with her when she's not "on."

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I sure hope Ms. Jacobs gets this right.

^ Even if she doesn't, anybody enough of a fan to read the book will know better anyhow.

"I think I'm the only person in New York who not only never met Elaine Stritch, but never saw her perform live. I'm frantically spinning that as an advantage…"
Frantically spinning. Deep deep deep sigh.

Such a dumb thing to say in a press release. However, I read the material submitted to publishers, and it was very good. And to be fair, many biographers never meet their subjects.
She's an excellent writer. Before she was at the Times, she made a name for herself at The New Yorker with a couple of great articles about Zappos and Spanx.

PJ your second sentence made me laugh out loud. I know you're being serious but it's a perfect sounding punchline.

It's been over three years , is this still going forward, is it being worked on or was it dropped? Does anyone know? Has anyone heard of people being interviewed for the book? Just curious.
Now living in DC. I really have to change my name on the board.
She was on the New York Times Book Review Podcast last week to talk about Jamie Bernstein's memoir Famous Father Girl (which, incidentally is now on my reading list), and she mentioned how she was working on the Stritch biography. No big details or anything, but yes she is working hard on it still.
