Looks like Disney is moving forward with Freaky Friday: the Musical, featuring a score from Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey.

Any buzz on who has been cast as the mother?

Why they gotta change all the names?

I just noticed that, too! That's lame. I liked the movie/book names. Boo.

The new names aren't doing it for me on paper! Sounds like some odd plot changes too (though I guess they could be from the book which I haven't read).

Anyway I love both movies and am very intrigued by the musical possibilities. I wonder who's been cast as the mother??

According to Playbill, the mother role has been cast. Maybe Idina? She just worked with the writers on "If/Then" and worked with Disney twice.

I feel like Ana Gasteyer would be great for this!

I rather doubt Menzel is involved, as she's busy with a tour this year and developing a TV show with Ellen DeGeneres (pilot for this year).

But I'm confused about one thing. Kitt/Yorkey was recently in Broadway news also for a different musical, The Visitor. Is it common for creators to start multiple projects like this?

Sherie Renee Scott? Stephanie J. Block? Carolee Carmello? Gaelen Gilliland and Mamie Parris also have the voice and comedic timing, but sadly, both are not big enough names.

@Pootie2 I believe Kitt & Yorkey have also been writing Magic Mike The Musical, so that's three for them currently.
I remember reading that Stephen Sondheim was writing Follies & Company at the same time, so multiple projects isn't that strange.

I believe the lore is that FOLLIES (THE GIRLS UPSTAIRS) was Sondheim's pet project thought the late 60's, and Hal Prince agreed to produce it if Sondheim did COMPANY for him.

It was also revealed based on some demos on the NYPL website that Bock & Harnick were writing FIDDLER ON THE ROOF and SHE LOVES ME at the same time./

"Is it common for creators to start multiple projects like this? "

With a very lengthy gestational period for new shows becoming more and more common it is also becoming more and more common for writers to be working on several projects at once. Gone are the days of conceiving, writing, and producing a show in a matter of months.

Thanks, both. I guess I'm not creative enough to wrap my head around the idea of working on multiple big projects at the same time. Out of the three Kitt/Yorkey are apparently working on now, I think I'm most interested in The Visitor, though.

All great possibilities, but Carolee was the first name to pop into my head. Ana could be inspired as well. Lots of choices!

Ana Gasteyer did the last workshop of the show. She seems perfect for the role.
