Not as crazy about it. She doesn't find as much humor in the lyrics as Madeline Kahn did, and he already sounds like he's straining to hit some of the notes. It's not Gallagher's fault that his voice isn't as strong as John Cullum's, but I wonder if he's going to have a hard time doing this 8 times a week. I saw him in Guys & Dolls when he was clearly having a hard time with the songs.
I loved it, and you're right, Taz, the orchestra sounded much better than I expected.
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)
Love it. Sounds like the perfect role for Cheno's voice. Ghallagher sounds way crisper than I'd have guessed. Can't wait for this to open. (And I loved Kahn and company onstage in the original.) Having 20th Century, On the Town and King and I on Broadway in the same season will be glorious.
They both sound terrific. I forgot how much I like most of the score. The only clinker for me is Our Private World. It is so slow and boring. Better than a sleeping pill at night. That song can put me out in half a minute.
@pippin423 My problem with Our Private World is the lyrics are so literal. A famous director and actress are saying "our private world is like a play about a pair of lovers; the plot says only we may enter and only we may share the light of love stage center." For a show whose score I mostly love, that song has to be some of Comden & Green's most rudimentary work.
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
I liked it. I'll always regret not seeing the original production. Had a chance in 1979, but my best friend had already seen it. We opted for Eubie! instead (I don't regret that choice though).
