Hey Everyone. I am a Senior in high school this year. I just moved to a new school, and they are doing GODSPELL for their spring musical. I am a Javert in LES MIS, SHREK type, and I'm not sure if it is worth being a part of. They're separating John and Judas into two roles, and another male is basically pre-casted as Jesus. Is it worth it for me to even audition? I have MT auditions this year, and will be busy so I've been on the fence about this.
The nice thing about Godspell is that it's a real ensemble show. The entire cast is onstage for the whole show.
I would get into the musical and then upstage everyone during performance. For example, you could twerk during "On The Willows".
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
I think you definitely should audition. As someone else said, it is an ensemble piece, with a lot of witty banter back and forth. The characters rely on each other. Since you are starting at a new school, it would be a great way for you to meet some people and maybe make a good friend through a group of like-minded actors and drama students. I see no harm in auditioning. I think it will be fine to handle both that and your MT auditions.
"Worth" being a part of?? With that attitude, no, don't audition.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
You need to open yourself to a variety of roles. Of course, there is still the question of auditioning and actually securing the role that you're looking at.
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
At your age you should grab every opportunity to get onstage that you can. That's how you learn and build your craft, which is what you should be focussed on at this point in your development.
Sounds like you want to do this as an adult. If that's true then you should perform any time there is an opportunity to do so. Also, watch the 'tude. Intended or not, it showed in your post. Be the guy everyone likes to work with.
