I'm surprised Giants is getting a Spring release rather than the usual November release. I think there is a Space based animated film from WDAS that is aiming for 2018 so I wonder if that is for November.

Confirmed as a musical!

Lasseter was speaking by phone after returning from a two-week tour of Asia to promote "Big Hero 6," Disney Animation's film opening this weekend, and the rest of the Disney Animation and Pixar slates, which include Disney's "Zootopia," a comedy about a fast-talking fox directed by Byron Howard; "Moana," a Polynesian musical directed by Ron Clements and John Musker...

Did you even watch "Brave"? Or read the synopsis of "Moana"? 'Cuz I don't see how a person who has done either of those things would compare the two, beyond the fact that both movies had/will have spirit characters.

Apparently, according to a poster on Tumblr who claims that her professor works with Disney, Selena Gomez is being considered for Moana. Thoughts?

According to IMDB, Disney Channel/pop star Naomi Sequeira will play Moana (Yeah, nice transition from a Tony winner to a pop star) and Dwayne Johnson is in the talks for the demigod, Maui

There is a docu-fiction with the same name from 1926 by Robert Flaherty (just google it) for Paramount, filmed on Samoa. The male lead was calles "Moana", which apparently means "deep water" in the Samoan language.

Don't worry Naomi Sequeira has NOT been cast as Moana that was posted before the casting call was announced.

Selena Gomez could work as Moana but I would LOVE to see Ciara Renee in the role!!!

Actually, the Disney crew decided to find an unknown to play this princess. I've been keeping up with the movie for a while, and a month or two ago they were holding online auditions. Tons of teens sent in auditions on Youtube, etc, and these two young ladies received a callback for a real audition.

In my opinion, either girl would be amazing.

Makamae defientely has a spectacular voice, but Ciana sounds younger and powerful. Either would be great, but my money is on Makamae.

I agree. Makamae is closer to the Polynesian culture (and has the gorgeous accent oh my gosh), but Ciana is closer to age and has a more "stereotypical disney princess" voice.

The character Moana is 14.

Also, I saw that people earlier were talking about the title. I've heard that Moana (Moe - ah - nah) may be changed to 'Spirited' just like Tangled, Brave, and Frozen.

I think that Eva Noblezada would be great for this!

laneyjd00: That's false. That was a part of a fake leak.

And YES for Eva!

Thanks for clarifying. I wasn't sure. That's why I wrote 'I heard'.

Also, Eva isn't Hawaiian or Polynesian. It think someone in the same/similar descent as the princess would fit better. The movie already has people worried that it won't be culturally correct.

Voice casting has everything to do with the spirit that an actress/singer can capture with her voice and it has nothing to do with the descent of the actual actress, because it just doesn't matter at all.

Linda Larkin was a blonde girl who voiced princess Jasmine wonderfully. If a white girl would be the voice of Moana, it should not be a problem either.

The Dutch version of Tiana is voiced by a white/Asian actress, and she did it very well. She was simply the best for the role, voice wise.

I think Eva Noblezada captures the spirit of Moana (for what I have seen of her in drawings) very well.

Have you guys noticed that Disney usually never hires mainstream singers or actors to play the princesses? I doubt Selena has the job.

But, even by your own admission of "usually" that doesn't mean "never." Mandy Moore in Tangled, for instance, and Demi Moore in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (though I guess you can argue that Esmeralda is not part of the "Princess" franchise).

I wouldn't say that Selena Gomez has it or doesn't, but if she doesn't get it then I wouldn't say that it was because of her celebrity status.

^Not to mention, Kristen Bell for Frozen. Again, she was really good and has a beautiful voice. And apparently, she was the first one to audition, but no one was as good as her. Plus, Kristin Chenoweth was the original actress for Rapunzel. And honestly, as much as I'd love to see her in the princess lineup, she does not fit Rapunzel at all. She's too high and squeaky for a petite 18 year old girl. Mandy Moore was literally the voice I've always pictured for Rapunzel, so I was glad they chose her. (Even though I was upset at first)

And I'm praying (exaggerating) that Selena does not get Moana. Her voice just doesn't fit the character and Moana is supposed to be a very strong singer. Excellent that they're looking for a newcomer like the 90s princesses' voice actresses were and I hope they choose one out of the thousands of girls. And yes, Courtney Reed would be an excellent choice: She has the voice and the princess background. I would not mind Ciara Renee, but I think she might be TOO strong and old-sounding for a 14 year old girl.

Musker and Clements have always gone with lesser know actresses for their projects. (Benson, Larken, Eagan, Anika Noni Rose.) I imagine we will see the same for Moana. As for Moore playing in Tangled, I don't think there was anyone else who could've done the part! it was very consistent with the animation. More so than Idina in Frozen. Also on another note, when Chenoweth was part of Rapunzel, it was much different project than what ended up being the final film.
