Sardi's Caricatures |
I was literally JUST saying the same thing to my sister when I saw this pop up--ha! Yeah, some of the newer ones don't really look like caricatures to me, just sort of cartoony, not particularly attractive portraits. Caricatures would typically accentuate one or more of the subject's features, which many older Sardi's caricatures do....
Updated On: 8/16/14 at 09:00 AMI thought it was very nice how everyone pretended like NPH was given a caricature of him rather than some stranger.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
The old charicatures by Alex Guard and Don Bevan are wonderful at capturing the distinct personalities of the subjects. The more recent ones by Richard Baratz, not so much.

The Bevan ones are the best. It's immediately evident who the person was just looking at it, whereas with the more recent ones it's only a vague resemblance (and not even caricatured).

^Ones of the craziest is Paul Rudd's. I NEVER would have known it was a portrait of Paul Rudd without seeing him next to it.
I was just having a conversation about this last night. The recent ones have all been so dreadful! I'm genuinely shocked that nobody has complained to them, and that they themselves haven't noticed the dreadful quality of the work. I feel genuinely bad for all the actors who have to stand in front of photographers pretend like their portrait is good.
Boy, that doesn't look anything like Paul Rudd. Followspot, is that Cyndi Lauper? If it is, her's is even worse.

Updated On: 11/13/14 at 04:35 PMThe current artist is seems to think that everybody's noses are smaller than they are. Maybe it's a stylistic choice? If so, it's a bad one.
This has actually been discussed a lot here. A lot of people (myself included) don't think that the artist is very good.
Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!
Caricatures---certain striking characteristics are exaggerated in order to creat a comic or grotesque effect.
Where is that with NPH or other recent ones ? Take the real person away from next to the pic.and you would have no idea who it is supposed to be.
Shame Sardi's.

Don't get me started! If I was Norm, I'd say, "Don't put that up!" THEY SUCK! The guy doing the space art on 47th street could do better.

gleek4114, you beat me to it. I was going to ask why Cyndi Lauper is holding a picture of Bernadette Peters.
I love you, Reg.
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)
I thought Cyndi Lauper was holding up a portrait of Hedwig.

I don't have a photo at the ready, but I remember thinking that Hugh Jackman's so-called likeness at Sardi's resembled "90201" star Luke Perry more than HJ.
