I just came back from vacationing in East Tennessee and fell in love with the music and magic of Dolly Parton all over again. Read in recent interview with her that she is working on an autobiographical stage musical. She even suggested Kristen Chenoweth could be a good choice to play her. With "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" (along with Alladin) just declared by NY Times as the official smash hit musicals of the recently concluded season, I think Dolly's musical would be as big, if not even, bigger,

Your thoughts? Any inside scoop on how far along the Dolly musical might be?

Although she already essentially did the same thing in 9 to 5, I still think Megan Hilty would be a better fit than Kristin Chenoweth.

Although I personally don't have much interest in a Dolly Parton autobiographical musical, I feel it does have a shot at being very successful. It could be a hit or miss.

Good suggestion. I wonder why Dolly singled out only Chenoweth. She did mention ScarJo for the eventual film version.

Until this past week and purchasing 6 of Dolly's classic early albums, I've considered Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Laura Nyro, and Rosanne Cash the greatest female songwriters of the Last 50 years: now I'd put Dolly right up with them. Her larger-than-life/over-the-top persona really does dwarf her true songwritng genius.

I couldn't agree more, Bob.

Parton, Springsteen, Billy Joel and Don Henley: four pop songwriters who rank with the best Broadway writers.

Chenoweth has been saying she wants to play Dolly in some form for years. Maybe Dolly is acknowledging that.

I dunno. Parton's all about the ta-tas while Chenoweth is all about the hoo-hoo.

Very true about her songwriting. She's written some absolutely wonderful songs over the years, but it seems that nobody ever acknowledges it.

I feel that's a fact that's pretty widely acknowledged.

Yeah, not sure where you get that notion Mr. Nowack. My impression is that she is one of the most beloved, successful and critically respected country music artists of the past 40+ years. She just had a very well received set (if you'll pardon the expression) at the Glastonbury Festival, too.

Perhaps I was being a bit too hyperbolic. I should have said it didn't get as much acknowledgement as it could.

If it doesn't do well in New York they can always mount a 90 minute version at Dollywood.
