Am in the west end caught the first preview of Shakespeare In Love tonight, I will keep it brief but WOW, simply WOW this knocked me on my ass an absolute home-run and the sooner this comes to New York (with this cast) the better, bringing this to the states should be Disney's 1st priority right now because its going to be a HUGE hit in the west end, Lee Hall has done a fabulous job adapting the film, and the cast from top to bottom is phenomenal. Also Tom Stoppard was there this evening and he seemed in very good spirits afterward.
Well, for starters, a musical might open up a can of worms on an old plagiarism suit. Incidentally, the musical mentioned in this article is quietly revving up for a new run with a revamped score.
I believe Sonia Friedman was the one who was developing it, Disney came aboard later on since they own the rights to Shakespeare in Love as they used to own Miramax. It's interesting that Disney are branching out with plays although Shakespeare in Love is the third they've produced as Arcadia and Peter and the Starcatcher were also produced by them on Broadway but this is their first as lead producer.
My spouse saw it and really liked it, but I don't have many details on what she liked or didn't like. She barely recalled the film, so the show felt fresh to her.
"I'm glad to read such positive opinions(so early on)! The photos posted on BWW didn't do it any favors. They're fairly generic and bland."
I get what you're saying, looking at the show posters I was expecting the production to be a bit more lively & colorful. But nevertheless I'm glad to be hear positive feedback.
