Idina Menzel's Tony performance |
She was amazing. And I love how simple it was. Idina's vocal histrionics are not for everyone but it was perfect for the emotion of the song.

It's unreal. This is how contemporary musical theatre should be performed. She throws her heart and soul out onto that stage. This is passion. Reckless abandoned. Truly one of a kind.

This was the best performance of the night for me.
I'm so happy. I'm so proud. She was beautiful.

Ditto to all of the above. I hope it brings more to see If/Then - which I liked much more than the general critics.
I regret being the dissenting voice but I didn't get that performance. Yes, she can belt her face off but I didn't get the emotional journey. What I got was technique and working the soft palate like a full-time job. She is not, IMHO, the best singing storyteller around by a long shot despite those fierce pipes.
Hands down, HANDS DOWN the best performance of the night. It drives me crazy that this show is not getting the respect it deserves. Also, I cannot believe this song did not elicit a standing ovation from the audience. What a special talent this woman is.

Err, there's a whole show that comes before that song typically... it's not really a self-contained piece.

There's no question about that voice. But I imagine she's not going to appreciate how she looks when she see's the playback. The facial expressions were truly frightening. What looks good on stage does not always translate to the camera.
"it made me NOT want to see the show. What an awful song."
Then that was a good three minutes of your time, no?

Yes it was a good three minutes of my time.
So was previewing the score on itunes. Some god awful Broadway music.
And that song on the Tony's put the nail in my desire to see the show coffin.
The room I was in (Tony party) all theatre people.. all thought it was mundane.
And it is only our opinion so don't bite my head off cause it just grows back.

I wasn't biting your head off. Not every show is for everyone. So, if you don't like the music for If/Then, then you're ahead of the game of the people who went and didn't like it, or the people on the fence. I happened to love it and saw it three times, but that's kind of what's good about it. There are shows for everyone. Removing the shows you don't want to see increases your odds of seeing something you like...
