"And it's quite possible this year that she will break two tony records not because she was, as usual, marvelous, but because she took an unfathomable risk and surpassed everyone's wildest expectations."

What unfathomable risk might that be?

I would love to see Audra hold the record, but I just cannot pick her over Cherry Jones or any other actress actually acting in a play using spoken words rather than music.

There are a lot of spoken words in Lady Day. And it's not as if Audra chose the category.

I wish I saw the Cherry Jones perfomance that everyone is raving about but something was off the night I saw the show. Both she and Bolger seemed off as if they may have been a bit under the weather

"what unfathomable risk might that be"

that of trying to convincingly portray vocally and dramatically a legendary singer - whom few if any thought she was a natural fit for - studying to assay the role for two years and proving those who thought this was an insane idea wrong; check out the remarks from people on bww on other threads if you can't imagine what the many nay-sayers said

Btw, a good job of pr on this whole production; unless I'm mistaken very little if anything was known about this show until relatively shortly before it opened; a wise move

And adding the layer of portraying a Billie Holliday unfamiliar to most audiences. It is a legendary performance unlikely to be seen again.

Could be uncageg and I saw the same performance. The ladies were perfectly fine, though we were more captivated by Brain J. Smith' Gentleman Caller. Yet for us the supreme performance that night was Zachary Quinto's revelatory take on Tom.

We've loved Cherry Jones in many other shows, and will again, no doubt. But the Tony should go to Audra this year, not for the sake of the history it will make, but rather because of the great performance it rightfully honors.

Mister Matt, I know Audra didn't chose the category...I don't think I implied that. I wasn't trying to. It will be very exciting to see Audra win, I was just sharing my opinion (which I forgot you're not allowed to do on this message board). This is certainly an exciting year.

I guess my post should read: I 100% agree with everyone else, Audra should win!!!

I, too, was underwhelmed by pretty much every aspect of the recent MENAGERIE, but chiefly Jones' performance. I don't think she was well-cast as Amanda at all, and having seen Jones in about a dozen different productions, I've learned that she's an actor of immense talent who doesn't always do well when poorly cast. That was the case here.

The best performance of the year from a female actor was Rebecca Hall in MACHINAL; sadly, she was overlooked. I expect Audra to win.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Wasn't MACHINAL wonderful?!?! I agree, Hall was overlooked.

I don't think Menagerie was a case of being miscast as much as it was just a very different interpretation of Amanda than we're used to seeing. I loved it, but I can definitely see where others would not.

There is no way Cherry is winning this. This is Audra vs Jan Maxwell all over again. Kind of a race, but not really. Audra's show is running, it's a powerhouse performance, and she gets to sing. Looking forward to another Audra win!

I was one that thought Cherry was sublime. Nothing against Audra (I have not seen Lady Day) but I am rooting for Jones to win as well as for Brian J Smith -- I found him to be a revelation as the Gentleman Caller. (I'm thinking he's got much less a shot than does Cherry of winning, though.)

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I liked The Glass Menagerie and everyone in it. I especially liked Muhly's score and Bolger and Smith's work in the Laura/Jim scene.

It goes without saying that this is just my opinion but here goes: Jones gave a very good performance but McDonald was astonishing.

I agree with henrickgerman. I was moved on a very deep level by Jones and maybe that's why I'm so partial to her. On the other hand, I was blown away by Audra. But since Audra is in the play category, maybe that will open things up for Kelli O'Hara.

I secretly really really want Kelli to win on the musical side, but I think the Jessie force may be too strong. I'm also even more secretly holding out for a random Sutton upset. I'd just really love to see an upset in the best musical actress category... Jessie is just too obvious even though I love her, and tbh I really wish she'd win for a different role.

Mister Matt, I know Audra didn't chose the category...I don't think I implied that. I wasn't trying to.

It sounded as if you believe she shouldn't win because you believe she was nominated for the wrong category, though that has nothing to do with her performance.

I was just sharing my opinion (which I forgot you're not allowed to do on this message board)

Nobody said you couldn't. You can express your opinion and you can respond to the posts of others just like anyone else.

Post what you want. Just like anyone else.
