i read in an article on I think Playbill where John Rubinstein said that he was going on tour as Charlemagne after his brief stint with the Broadway production.
I would LOVE it if after those rumors following Patina's exit that Nicole Scherzinger was playing the LP on tour. She'd be awesome on the tour and I'd love to see her. I'd love to see either Nicole, Gabrielle, or Stephanie Pope.
Perhaps she's understudying Berthe because she has covered the role since day 1, as well as performed it many times? It could simply be a cost-saving strategy or one where production thinks this makes the most sense...one of those, "You know this role, one less person to teach, train, and rehearse."
A principal understudying a larger principal role isn't that unheard of. The Lewis track covers Pippin in this production. In Wicked, many of the Nessarose' have been Elphaba covers. It's seems odd that she's covering a smaller role, but that may be the nature of this show.
I saw a production of Spring Awakening where the actor playing Moritz understudied Melchior---that's even weirder. But I could understand the convenience--Fastrada needs to be a seriously strong dancer, while Berthe and LP need to be more triple threats, and work the trapeze, so I guess it makes sense.
Isn't Billy Tighe doing Book of Mormon in London? Unless it is a really short engagement he won't be on the Pippin tour anytime soon....although I read somewhere his wife is playing Katherine on the tour. That would be convenient. Maybe their dog could get a spot too!
@ oncemorewithfeeling2 - I don't think Lewis is considered a Lead, but instead supporting. At least Erik has always been on the second page of cast pictures that is after the bios, instead of with the rest of the main cast. It always seemed strange cause the role is kinda big, but it seems to be considered supporting instead of lead.
how'd you find this out(Harper u/s Berthe & LP)?? I'm curious who's u/s what roles for the tour. The show's website has very little info regarding the tour.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
Darreyl, I agree with what you said. He's one of the few named characters, but Lewis isn't as important as Charles, for example. But it seems more then just "featured ensemble." The show can't just eliminate Lewis if the actor calls out, as some shows do when ensemble members are out.
Anyone in the know--is the role of Lewis considered a chorus part and on a chorus contract, or is it principal?
Was this posted somewhere else? Looks like Andrea Martin wants to remind tv/film casting directors she's still around. Seems like a very smart move on her part.
on twitter on the Pippin Musical page they retweeted a photo of a list of the cast from a performing arts center they are going to and in the photo it says: Sabrina Harper - Fastrada U/S Leading Player/ Berthe. https://twitter.com/PippinMusical

I saw Kyle in his first performance of The Book of Mormon as Elder Price in LA in the beginning of the year & he was AMAZING!!! He has a star quality & great voice.
