I LOVE this show and loved the last revival with Nathan Lane. Saw it multiple times with Lane and 3 times with Whoopi who was also wonderful. Then there's David Alan Grier... ummm... yeah. Oy! Anyway, I have mixed feelings about another revival. My interest would depend on casting. I honestly can't think of anyone currently with a big enough name, but who would also be RIGHT for the vaudevillian type humor of this show to pull it off. I can think of several names that would make me sob with depression (and possibly even suicidal) at the thought of their casting.
I would love to see a reverse Godspell Original Toronto Cast situation- a bunch of great comedians and stage actors, mostly sort of past their prime, thrown together in a show that allows them all to shine.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Forum is my very FAVORITE show. I'm so thrilled by this news. I think there's ton of potential in terms of casting.
James Corden, Geoffrey Rush, Danny Burstein, Christopher Fitzgerald (Although I see him more as a Hysterium) and yes, even Jack Black, would all be inspired. Other actors I'd love to see tackle the role: Martin Short Mark Hammil Mike Myers Paul Reubens John C. Riley Rowan Atkinson Josh Gad Patton Oswalt - just anyone but Richard Kind, Jason Alexander, Oliver Platt, or John Tracey Egan... Love them both, but we don't need a Nathan Lane copy...
Brooks Ashmanskas or Denis O'Hare as Hysterium Jonathan Freeman as Marcus Lycus Christopher Lloyd or Dick Van Dyke as Senex Robert Morse as Erronius And I'd love a too old/gawky Hero... Like Jim Parsons
Honestly, I think it would be great if they could get Lane to come back as Senex this time. And just watch, they'll probably try and get Josh Gad for Pseudolus...
