So which of these directors do you think deserves a nomination for this year's Tony Awards? If there is someone on this list that you think doesn't deserve a nomination at all, please keep it to yourself!
Best Director of a Play: LOCKS: John Tiffany-The Glass Menagerie (My winner. Can't speak to all) LIKELY: Bill Rauch-All the Way Michael Grandage-The Cripple of Inishmaan Joe Mantello-Casa Valentina POSSIBLE: Lonny Price-Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill Anna D. Shapiro-Of Mice & Men SPOILERS: Kenny Leon-A Raisin in the Sun Lindsay Posner-The Winslow Boy
Best Direction of a Musical: LIKELY: Michael Mayer-Hedwig & the Angry Inch Casey Nicholaw-Aladdin Leigh Silverman-Violet (My winner, though I can't speak to all) Darko Tresnjak-A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder Warren Carlyle-After Midnight SPOILERS: Bartlett Sher-The Bridges of Madison County Susan Stroman-Bullets Over Broadway (or Big Fish) Alex Timbers-Rocky
I think Warren Carlyle or Michael Mayer might be considered the likeliest winners with regards to best director of a musical with Darko Tresjnak a very real possibility. (And think all three are locks to be nominated with the other two slots going to Casey Nicholaw and Susan Stroman.)
John Tiffany for The Glass Menagerie is probably the winner in the play category.
I suspect James Lapine will be nominated for Act One. It's a huge, sprawling production and he's someone very well loved in the Broadway community.
I also would be very surprised if Stroman doesn't get nominated for Bullets. Again, the Tony voters love her (I mean, they even nominated her for Big) and there seems to be enough strong supporters of the show for it to make a splash.
Of course, all this could be turned upside down if the Tony committee shocks us all and makes Cabaret eligible, in which case this could very well be their chance to reward Mendes and Marshall with their first Tonys.
For plays, I think John Tiffany, Tim Carroll and Lyndsey Turner all have a great chance at a nomination and I think one of them will be the winner. Then there's Bill Rauch, Kenny Leon, Michael Grandage and Joe Mantello duking it out for that last slot.
