Gorgeous photos...but the pic of Idina in the IF/THEN advert that popped up in the middle of the slideshow kinda made me giggle.

Last year we camped in Chincoteague (just across the channel from this island) We camped on the shore. So we could see across the channel and watch the horses. We also spent a few days exploring the island. I'd never heard of such a thing before we went. It was amazing! The article calls them ponies, but in fact, they are actually regular horses that evolved to be smaller over time because of the minimal resources on the island. It was amazing to see them running wild.

Also, The island is famous for a children's book and movie about one of the horses, "Misty of Chincoteague"

I first learned about this island many years ago when the movie "Violets are Blue" came out.

Just wonderful.

I went to Assateague with my mother and her boyfriend years ago, when we were on vacation on the Delmarva Peninsula, but we didn't see any horses until we were in the car on our way off the island. I'd love to go back, and hopefully see some horses that weren't just ambling up to the cars as they drove away.

MISTY OF CHINCOTEAGUE was one of my favorite books as a child. I have never gotten close enough to this area to see the islands. Maybe one day...

On a related note, My friend Roberto has been taking stunning photos of the feral horses of Sable Island--off the coast of Nova Scotia--for many years.

Check out his website or--if you are in NYC--his gallery down on Grand St. The images are extraordinary.

Givesmevoice, they're not as abundant as the pictures make it seem. It's a big island and you have to kind of hunt them down. They weren't frolicking on the populated beaches when we went. But we saw them when we went hiking through the woods and the non-public beaches. What made it amazing was that they were usually in a big string (the name for a group of ponies) of maybe 20-30 hanging out together, romping around in the surf or swimming across an inlet.

My favorite family vacation of my life, six years ago, was to Chincoteague, and I've been longing to get back ever since. It's really quite a hidden gem.

artscallion, if I'm remembering correctly, we walked on trails through marshes and by woods but it was admittedly not a very nice day, so we didn't spend a ton of time walking around the island. I'm sure if we had spent a little more time walking around, we would've seen some.

Isn't it? As you can see on his website, there are images in the gallery that are enormous. Between the scale of the images, the beauty of the horses and Roberto's many artistic and technical gifts, they are absolutely mesmerizing.

Several years ago, I went to Chincoteague Pony Swim. It's so interesting to see the horses swim through the water.
