Just saw a picture of the pre show set. They have extended the rubble/beams/bricks outside the proscenium and into the house over the boxes. It looks great.

I could be majorly wrong but don't remember a fancy curtain or extended set out into the audience in London.

Sometimes it baffles me to see sets, etc and I go wow all this cost millions of dollars to do? Then I can see almost the exact same thing at my local regional theater and that really only cost them like $50,000 and they are equity houses!

Factor in higher labor costs to build it, higher costs to transport it to the theatre (many regional companies have their scene shop on site), higher load-in costs, higher fees for the designers, and the fact that the shows are built to last much longer than they are in regional houses. You can cut a lot of corners when your set only has to last anywhere from 2-6 weeks, as opposed to building it to potentially withstand a run of several years or more.

Plus, what you see in those curtain pictures is far from the whole set--several pieces roll on and off, which adds a ton of cost. Many of the regional theatres with the highest budgets in the country rarely use automated scenery.

Wow, been checking Twitter and so far word is that the show is awesome. Pleasantly surprised to hear good feedback - I had been worried about this revival, but I'm psyched to check it out now.

@WmShaw: I've never heard such thunderous applause by a theatre audience. Congrats on a great show, LesMisBroadway. #LesMisBwy

@karabmcg: Les Mis was truly amazing. An epic story with a talented cast and wonderful staging. Go see this production if you can.

@audsheaney: Oh my god Les Mis was amazing..

@SammyKeating: Les mis was absolutely amazing. I have no words

@ClubAliP: Oh my gawd. Les Mis was unbelievable. My mouth was agape the entire time. I wept. I laughed. I am LIVING for that show right now. #24601

This is the one show I have been most curious about this season. I'd love to hear how it was. Seeing it next week. Updated On: 3/2/14 at 12:00 AM

In this case though, you actually can see this same scenery at a regional theatre since Pittsburgh CLO rents out the original Matt Kinley design that the tour and this revival is based on.

^ That design is similar, but not the same.

That's why I said it was his original design. I know there have been changes made.
