Dave19 is a notorious moron and his idiocy has been well-documented.

"What's next? Snow Black and the 7 Swaggers? Shasquirta and the Beast? 101 Weavematians? Willis in Ghettoland?" - Dave19, in reference to the new ANNIE remake.

In all honesty, I do see his point. But I also see everyone else's point.

Don't shoot me, but imagine if there was a "Straight Actors Tony Awards." It's kind of the same idea. Take a minority in a big field and give them their own host of awards.

"Representation is not about perfect proportions: it's about making sure talented actors get matched with quality parts. It's ALSO about minority actors not only getting cast in roles defined by their race."

I mean, I get your point. But it's a business that's pretty much based predominantly on luck. There are plenty of great actors and actresses who haven't gotten matched up with quality parts, etc. That's the business. And define by race? Sure. But the same can be said for the hot-blonde who always plays the ditz, the fat girl who always plays the loser, the buff dude who is always the dumb jock. Hollywood is not as progressive as they'd like to think.

But I also think Black Entertainment as a whole is some terribly written stuff. Tyler Perry? Terrible.

Here's a small anecdote: My friend was working on the recent revival of "Trip to Bountiful." The director is white and has worked with Horton Foote religiously. The play was staged to be this small, moving little piece. It got decent reviews, but the crowds weren't responding. So… the director leaves and the actors start hamming it up. Cuba Gooding, Jr. starts doing double-takes to the audience. Tyson starts hamming it up and being over-the-top crazy. The audiences start piling in.

Not totally sure the point I'm trying to make, but just that I find it interesting. I know we've had this argument before, but why can't people of other races see shows with other races and enjoy them just the same? I can go see Dreamgirls or Motown or Romeo + Juliet or Trop to Bountiful and still be moved and engaged, but I bet you'd be hard pressed seeing a group of black people at Matilda or Twelfth Night. Why is that?

Straight actors are not a minority, not even on Broadway. Jesus.

I don't get the issue. Never mind "minority" or race, special interest groups often give awards ... there are science fiction awards, Independent Spirit awards, child actor awards, not to mention all the union and guild awards for costumes and music and visual effects societies, etc.

There are also multiple awards for ethnic groups, like the Black Reel Award and the NAACP Image Award, etc.

Yes, there are a lot of awards. They are mostly PR for the organizations as well as the people they are honoring. They promote awareness for all concerned.

I wouldn't flip out over it. It doesn't hurt anybody ... well, except the feelings of the people who lose, maybe.

And bigots. It definitely hurts the feelings of bigots.

How dare those damn minorities get their own awards show -- and broadcast on an obscure cable channel on a Monday night?! Well, I never... Hmph.

Thanks for the replies. There are many minority groups.

"They gays, the hot-blonde who always plays the ditz, the fat girl who always plays the loser, the buff dude who is always the dumb jock."

I think for a healthy future for yourself and our children, it is VERY important that we do NOT organize: The annual fat actress award, because they have been oh so suppressed, etc. I am sure there are some fat actresses who would love this kind of awards, but as long as they feel that way, and insist on separating themselves from other people, it means they don't see themselves as human beings with the same worth as everyone else. And as a result, others won't see it either. That is nature.

Of course they will turn it around and say, we need this awards to gain self esteem, but that is not the solution. It is the other way around.

Everyone who supports this kind of awards is keeping the separation intact. And that comes with consequences.

"Take your hostility towards black people--because clearly, it's in there--and go f*ck yourself."

You know, I remember when I was a kid, when Whitney won her awards I was jumping around the house of joy and happiness. And today I'm still grateful for each and every maintream award that black people win. I celebrate it with them, just the same as I celebrate it with every other human being.

It's hostile reactions from black people like you, that makes it seem that it's never enough and that you are not real people. It's in yourself, not in me. Stop influencing new generations with things like separate awards for minority groups. That will form people's minds. Kids don't see the difference. What do I tell my kids if they ask me "daddy, why are black people not happy with the tons of mainstream awards they've won? Shouldn't we celebrate it all together?"

Because fact is, the mainstream world does celebrate and awards Beyonce, Diana Ross, Rihanna, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Prince, Oprah Winfrey, Halle Berry, Quincy Jones, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Lionel Richie, Wynton Marsalis, Etta james, Jay-z, Usher, Kanye West, Jamie Foxx, John Legend, Denzel Washington, Sidney Poitier, Forest Whitaker,Morgan Freeman, Diahann Carroll, Jennifer Holliday, Audra McDonald, Patina Miller, Whoopi Goldberg, etc, etc, etc.

My only answer to them could be: "Yes honey, you can reach them the hand and offer to celebrate it together, but chances are big they push it away and insist on having their own awards."

And I still have no answer to the question why it should be necessary that black people must have at least 2% more of the available roles than any other ethnicity. Is there some contract for that? Also because of the suppression? Suppression is no green light to act like beasts for the rest of your life.

"Oh screw it! Let's just get rid of the Oscars, Emmys, and Tonys. We should just have one award to recognize achievement across all media."
Why? It's great to give people awards based on their outstanding performances in different areas of the business. Acting in a film can not be compared to singing a hitsong. Are you telling me that a black person can not be compared to a white person? Ouch. Let's organize the red head awards next! Because clearly they are not normal people.

From what I've read about the Black Reel Awards, it seems their mission is to celebrate, recognize, and foster growth among black filmmakers. It's a stance that promotes support and encouragement after years of being maligned in and denied a voice in cinema for generations. They're doing it for themselves, by themselves. The same people participate in the larger celebration of filmmaking evidence that many take for granted. The two are not mutually exclusive. And it's not for you to decide whether or not they should or could or would do this. This community obviously knows what they need and have organized themselves to provide it themselves. It's none of your business, frankly. And nobody cares what you think about it (the discussion of your blithering tirades notwhistanding).

I'm still not completely convinced this dumb heifer doesn't just enjoy riling people up and that in reality he doesn't give a good goddamn about any of this stuff. But like always, he says he's gonna stfu and then he never ever does. You may not really be some tired douchenozzle that has profoundly effed up views on race, particularly race in America, but you definitely ain't a man of your word.

Stfu, dave19. And everyone else, please just block him.

My dear goodness,I've had to skip read through a lot of this[didn't understand what it was all about actually with this 2% of something]until Blactor came along.Wow-can that man write? As an Australian, curiously we are supposed to be racist, but think with our humour we just insult everyone-we [I] have no understanding of the black/white situation at all.I thank Blactor for being so eloquent-was sorry his post ended. This award is for the 'voice'that happens to be wrapped in the package that is Audra.I would think, possibly,it could mean more to her than any other.
