As cool as that is, there is no way Wicked would be a Disney film. The only film company that would make it is Universal.

Considering Universal has made more profit with WICKED then from any of their Hit Movies, there is no way in HELL they are going to allow Disney the property rights. That is unless Disney ends up buying Universal from Comcast.

If the rights weren't an issue, I think it could turn out quite nicely.

However, 2.5 hours is awfully steep for A Disney animated feature, and if they make drastic cuts there would be a major backlash.

^ Maybe it wouldn't have to be animated? they could do it like they are dong Into the Woods. Hey, maybe Stephen Shwartz would even write a new song?

If it's going to be live action Universal might as well do it and save the trouble. The only reason to let Disney get a hold of it would be to capitalize on their legendary animation division.

Does Universal have an animation division?

Mainly direct-to-video sequels to their big hits with Spielberg's Amblimation division, and they haven't made anything notable since 2011, but yes, there is an animation division. And it is inventively named...

So they do have an animation division, but it's not high on their priorities. I wonder if Universal would ever try to develop their own animated WICKED.

It's a good question. One thing they'll have to contend with if they ever make a film is competing with the classic Wizard of Oz on its own terms, and any live action film they make is going to pale in comparison to the memory of the original. Doing an animated version immediately eliminates the need to compare, because you expect a unique take on the story from an animated version.
