"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
If Thanksgiving week is not going to be a good week, Broadway would be in real trouble. Glad to see that people did not let the bad weather earlier in the week keep them from the theater.
Happy to see a nice bump for AGGTLAM. I know its going to drop next week, but if it can maintain even half of the sales bump from this week prospects are looking good for the show. Ciderella's sales bump confirm at least in my opinion that it is a tourist show, which may have its producers hold out till June to post a notice, especially since nothing is ready to move into the Broadway akin to what the Shuberts did with Sister Act, except for that Cinderella may actually make money in the end.
Mamma Mia still made less than what it did on a slow week at the Winter Garden, if sales in general don't pick up I don't expect it to be around this time next year, unless its Mamma Mia's swan song.
Interesting Motown did not sell out on a Holiday week, although the show is in no danger of closing.
Mamma Mia should have had a bigger bump, doesn't bode well for the quieter weeks. Jersey Boys doesn't seem to be doing as good as it did before in terms of the number of seats but its grosses are respectable.
I'm surprised Janis Joplin, After Midnight & Beautiful didn't do better this week.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
Is Beautiful really that commercial of a show? I thought it would be as popular as Motown, but for a different demographic. Kinky Boots made nearly 2 million dollars very impressive. Janis Joplin not looking to good. Especially with that small of a house. But we are about to be in full holiday season. Lets see what happens.
