"I really think the voters were too favorable this year for Kinky Boots this year."
And you got all of this just by listening to the CD's and reading the liner notes?

It probably had something to do with receiving the most votes in those particular categories.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."

But after hearing listening to the MATILDA OBC cast, I did recongize that Kinky Boots really was overlooked at the Tonys.
I really think the voters were too favorable this year for Kinky Boots this year.
So, the voters overlooked Kinky Boots and were too favorable?

Yeah because they like gave awards to it but didn't like, give awards. It's totes complicated and it's like mkay if you don't understand because voting for awards is like AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH lol not 4 realz but just like for some of them so that's why it was overlooked but sooooooooo not deserving. But whatevs.
Jordan Catalano - you're a real piece of work. People can't express opinions without you acting like they're an idiot? Get over yourself. And the creator obviously realizes that it received the most votes - they are, along with a lot of others, wondering how it rec'd so many awards. 4 realzz sUmmm peeplee have diff opnionz than u!!!!! whatevsss!!!! xD

The OP's opinions varied just in that one post

Here's the thing: The op realizes this has already been discussed but makes a new thread about it anyway instead of just adding his own opinion to existing threads. The op uses words he doesn't know the meaning of. The op asks a ridiculous question: WHY did it win. It very simply won because it rec'd the most votes. That IS the answer. We will NEVER why anyone voted the way they did.
If anyone ever thinks there is a year that people DON'T disagree with the Tony Awards (or ANY awards show) they are naive.
It's not that the OPs opinion is worthless, but the thread is useless and old and redundant.
Would I have given it all the awards it rec'd? NO, but I'm not a voter, so my opinion means squat.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Let's not forget the cultural context, as well. This was a big year for the LGBTQ community, and in media and entertainment gay pride and acceptance is at an all-time high. So an empowering, American-made musical celebrating tolerance, acceptance and pride across a wide spectrum would have had big appeal. Add to that the participation of Cyndi Lauper, a longtime gay icon and supporter of equal rights.
Now contrast that with Matilda, a dark, satirical and (allegedly) "cold and heartless" show full of child abuse jokes, imported from London with many of its leads still intact. Is it a better show all in all? I would undeniably say yes. But one cannot discount the time and place a show premieres from the equation, and Kinky Boots apparently "felt right" to the committee more than Matilda did.

Wait, I'm sorry about the overlook part O_o I got confused. But yeah they were just too favorable. Sorry

When something receives a majority vote, it (usually) wins. Do you expect us to go interview each Tony voter? I'm so confused with this thread..
Thankfully it doesn't matter that KINKY BOOTS won the Tony Award for best score because in the end it doesn't change the fact that Matilda has the better score. ("Naughty", "When I Grow Up", "Quiet", "School Song", "The Smell of Rebellion").
I think that the Tony awards should select voters based on cognitive ability to prevent this mistake from happening in future. It has already happened so many times in the past.
Everybody say yeah!

Maybe because it deserved them.

Bear in mind, for PIPPIN, only Chet Walker was nominated for Best Choreography, and not Gypsy Snider (who is responsible for all of the acrobatics). Considering that particular nomination boiled down to only the choreography done in the style of Bob Fosse (or in the case of the "Manson trio", verbatim like Fosse), maybe they felt that PIPPIN's choreography was too close to the Fosse original to be considered worthy of its own award.
Had they co-nominated Gypsy Snider, it would've been a whole different ball game.

I dunno. I just saw Matilda for the 2nd time and I have seen Kinky Boots 4 times. I still prefer Kinky Boots for BEST Show, though I agree some of the individual categories might have gone differently. I still like some of the Matilda music more on the CD than in the theater - it's just too LOUD a show for my taste.
I did love Jill nu-Miss Honey - amazing. And I liked Craig more than I thought I would based what so many people here said. I think he did an amazing job not copying BC...making the role is own. I noticed the usher next to me this afternoon was laughing hysterically watching his performance. I did LOVE Sophia who I saw today..I thought she was utterly talented and charming.
But for an overall experience, I would race to go see Kinky Boots again..but I think I am Matilda-ed out after just twice (I still plan to buy the new CD but it's not there at the theater yet). I don't dislike Matilda. I just don't love it.
And not for nothing...I know everyone totally has their own opinions because different people like different everything - clothes, food, movies, tv, books, why not musicals. But what I overheard when I was leaving Matilda this afternoon from one woman was..."well it was good, but it was no Kinky Boots."
So to each his own. Some agree, some disagree, more of the Tony committee agreed about Kinky Boots so it won. So be it.

You know what the really nice thing is? It doesn't matter. It really doesn't. They are awards for art, which is sort of a strange concept in and of itself. Even the argument that the awards drive ticket sales seems to be less important than it used to be. Both shows were really wonderful and while I had personal opinions about which was better in each of the categories, ultimately, it doesn't matter either way. If you love Matilda, do so unashamedly. It is no longer competing with Kinky Boots for anything, though, so there's no point in degrading one to make the other look better. Just my two cents.
