newyorkuniq - What do you mean "background"??? I want some closeup camera time!

Who choreographed "That Thing You Do" for the Oscars? That was my favorite musical moment (excluding Billy Crystal medleys) of any Oscar broadcast.

As for Catch Me if You Can, I'm very curious about the musicalization of this project. I enjoyed the film, but got burned out on it when it was the only film playing on 6 flights I took in one year.

I think it should star David Hasselhoff!

And if he's not cast.....

well....

I just don't want to talk about it!

Hey, it's Marc Shaiman! The man who supplied the music to my potential Forbidden Broadway parody "Mama I'm a Homo Now"! Awesome! Hey!!!!

Philisophical Question You Have to Answer Cuz You're Marc Shaiman: Where do you feel the direction of Broadway is heading? Has the Golden Age passed us or are we on the precipe of it?

Fellow Ozians. Friends. We've been through a frightening time and there will be other times and other things that frighten us. So if you'll let me, I'd like to try to help, I'd like to try to be . . . Glinda the Good.

So our little group here popped in Beaches to get pumped for the Bette Midler concert (not till the 14th in Vegas but our tickets arrived). And there you are playing "Under the boardwalk " at the Bowl.

Oy! I'm late to the party!

Hello, Mr. S. I do believe it's you. Why not?

I have a question: is it true you were a pianist at Marie's Crisis? (And follow-up: if yes, what song/musical did you have to play the most/too much?)

Funny, just before I came into this thread, I was listening to Kander and Ebb's KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN, which was based on a film/book. I think the idea that a musical takes a movie into uncharted emotional territory is spot on. And though I didn't care for the movie HAIRSPRAY, I thought it could become a great musical. And despite the fact that I haven't seen it on Broadway, I think the songs are fab! (I have listened to the Annie Golden trial CD and about 1/2 of the Broadway Cast CD.) Sadly, I can never see the Broadway show. And Mr. S., SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER, AND UNCUT is a brilliant movie! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE .... do another one!!! I loved the songs, I've been motivated to buy the movie for myself and for many other people (it was a great present!) and I do watch it on a regular basis.

You have something to contribute and there will be highs and lows and fans and not-fans. I'm just happy to be a fan, and to be around while you're DOING THAT THING YOU DO SO WELL!!

Good luck with CATCH ME IF YOU CAN.

yep, my first gig was playing at Maries Crisis...I got that job and met Scott that same day when me and my friend stopped into Maries after seeing (ironically) BOY MEETS BOY at The Actors Playhouse.

I was only 16 and lied about my age...I can't remember what the most requested song was, but I do remember I was lowered from the 2nd floor wearing only a diaper on New years Eve

I resigned shortly after that

Ah, the visual.

Does Marie's Crisis remind anyone else of the closet in which Patty Hearst was kept?

After going there over the holidays, I felt like putting on a beret and knocking over a bank.

Ah, Marie's.

I was there the second week in January. Marie's is like Cher -- it'll never change. Well, one change -- it used to be so smoky in there that you could recreate a Vincente Minnelli dream sequence from "Yolanda and The Thief". No more.

The last time I stopped by Marie's Crisis there was a huge snowstorm and I ended up going home with a yoga instructor,a cop from Staten Island and a first year NYU theater student, I felt like the punchline of a very dirty joke. Long may it plays it's music to the huddled masses.

marie's was one of the first bars that i went to when i moved to nyc. i was working in the area and being a kid from the sticks who was used to dive bars it looked like just what i was looking for. imagine my surprise when i asked what time would be the best time to meet some girls there. that drove me to my second bar, out the door and around the corner to a bar that no longer exists: pandora's box. surprisingly enough, there were nothing but girls in this bar! and i narrowly escaped with my life.
