thoughts on "ignore", anonymity and reputational systems |
what portion of bww's revenue is directly tied to the forums?
of the traffic that this site generates, how much can be attributed to forum usage?
i would wager that the cost and engineering required to completely re-vamp this system to one in which users are required to verify their identities and/or create some kind of reputational system would far outweigh the potential benefits of any such system.
besides, the anonymity of a forum like this allows far greater exchange and invites people to share data in a way they might sht away from if it were tied to their real identity. the downside to that is trolling and some ugliness. such is life.
this argument has been going on as long as there's been a forum. and it will continue no matter what changes are made.
life is unfair. i think the fact that no one gets exactly what they want in this forum perfectly reflects that. it's one of the reasons i have always held such fondness for this place.

papalovesmambo... you make excellent points. Reputational systems are expensive to implement and currently there are no truly "off-the-shelf" good ones.
Life is unfair. Perhaps you are right and the negativity associated with sites like this is just a part of the package.
I offered my thoughts as I actually work on the science of such things and I thought the effort to reinstate the, "Ignore", feature a foolish effort. I also believe in making the Internet less anonymous as a means for making it safer. Many people truly believe this.
If the Internet is to become less anonymous, the functions that would verify a user's identity would most likely become a part of the interface and would be accessed by sites like BroadwayWorld. I don't believe it is practical for BW to be responsible for that level of security.

There have always been plenty of us who disagree vociferously here.
That is a separate issue from people who troll and try to claim they are being isolated because their opinions are different. It's not true. It's the trolling.

suestorm... it is not the intention of these systems / ideas to homogenize these posts, or even create a community of like-minded posters. In fact, the opposite. It allows for a greater freedom, but with integrity.
If someone has an opinion that is contrary to the "masses", why shouldn't they stand up for it completely out in the open... and it is the believe that those who disagree will be more respectful, because their comments will be directly associated with their true identity.
What would go away is the posts and posters who post purely for the effect of getting a negative reaction. At least that is the theory.

Another thought on the economics of forums... I don't know BroadwayWorld's business model, so I have no special insight, but I do know that BroadwayWorld uses facebook's API and as such the data gathered here is of great value.
(Whether or not BW charges for that data and how its exchanged, is outside of what I know, and is truly none of my business.)
As I wrote above, why do many of us here think that the ads we're being served are theater related? (Not just here, but across the web including your email's inbox.) It is not a coincidence. Your posts here on BroadwayWorld deem you a consumer of theater - and other related products - and that combined with a whole lot of other data is why you get the ads you get. (This is also an over simplification, but like reputational systems, a very important part of today's social media.)
This is today's marketing technologies. It is now just a fact of life.

Updated On: 8/23/13 at 11:24 AMthe ads depend on the site, artc3. on some sites i frequent, the ads are a direct result of my search history which makes for some hilarious moments when people rail against the ads they see - "don't like seeing ads for anal bleaching? well, stop googling it, einstein!"

FindingNamo... I also wholeheartedly agree with your post. The problem is that some people here use the term "troll" and "trolling" loosely and as such stop some genuine posters from expressing their opinion.
Personally, on more than one occasion, I found myself stifled by being called a troll. Yes, it is my own fault for allowing that poster's comments to effect me, but it hurt and my natural tendency was to avoid the sting.
Calling people / posts a troll / trolling can be just as "mean spirited" - if not more so - than the posts they disagree with.

The off-topic board was a gift bestowed upon us because many of the first generation posters here also enjoyed talking about things other than theater. It's not a right, it's a lovely gesture. It was an idea generated by the community that assembled here and board management responded to the idea.
There has never been a time when consistent trolling has been tolerated. Even during the ignore button era, one would still be exposed to the trolls one had ignored, since they were visible when you'd start a reply window.

I think several (if not most) of the problems encountered here could be alleviated if there was a way to filter out duplicate accounts.
I'm not I.T. so I don't know how that could be done effectively, but people popping up over and over again as disruptive entities is a major flaw in the moderation of this forum.

The ads on pretty much any website I go to now are almost exclusively theatre shows. I am quite proud that AdSense thinks so highly of me to so thoroughly focus my ad distribution this way.
But still, sometimes hilarious cracks in the wall form. Like this week, when on this very site I was shown on multiple occasions ads imploring that "All Patriotic Nigerians" vote on some corruption law or measure. It was truly surreal.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

i was going to make a similar comment, Taz. Do you know how many people have multiple identies on FB? I was talking to someone on a different discussion board who claims to have more than 50. She comments on her own posts, she uses some to be nasty, others to bully. Heck to get someone banned from the very group we were talking on she claims to have reported a poster from ALL of her accounts.
You can put whatever systems you want in place. People that want to stir up trouble are going to figure out how to do it. At least with this ignore button, I get to choose.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
I think anonymity is important here since there are many posters who are, to one degree or another, in the industry. They might not feel free to post here if they were not anonymous, particularly given the nature of the business and the public/press scrutiny it attracts.
Sondheim.com used a karma/smite program for many years. It was eventually eliminated because it caused more problems than it solved.
Some of the problems included posters who would pop up constantly in every thread to say they were giving you karma, because it had become the custom for you to then offer them karma back. It was worse than people who find self worth by collecting friends on facebook that they don't even really know.
Another problem was people became too aware of their karma number. So much so that they would notice when it went down one. Then some would stomp around demanding to know who smote them and why.
It really turned into grade school stuff and never prevented any trolling because trolls don't really care if people like them. Trolls would probably even feel good about having low karma scores.
It caused all kinds of hard feelings. And I'd go so far as to say that the site is now pretty much a shadow of what it was partly because of the karma system.
I agree with Dramamama. With an ignore system, I don't have to play into any annoying validation games. I can just choose who I do and don't want to deal with.

I would love to interact with them, but because of one person who has a habit of coming back over and over again in the guise of a tween I find that now I never truly know who is genuine.
ETA: I realize you never truly know who is genuine on an anonymous forum, but you know what I mean.

ARTc3, with the ignore button, nobody has to call anyone anything (though I imagine the usual name calling will go on). If you feel, for example, that my posts are consistently trolling, mean-spirited, or just plain dull, you can opt out of reading them without having to try to drive me away with invective.

A recovered memory from the Ignore Button days:
If you're like me and you frequently read the boards without logging in until you come upon a thread you'd like to add your voice to, you can see every single stupid post from every single troll you had hoped to never read again.
For instance, if a troll tells somebody that the troll ALSO doesn't use capital letters and people don't like her for THAT and not the fact that she's a horrible troll who trolls trollingly, then you might find yourself engaged with the very person you had hoped to never see evidence of again.
