THIS MONTH'S MUSICAL RARITY FROM MASTERWORKS BROADWAY

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC Film Soundtrack
Available on CD for the First Time August 13

Masterworks Broadway continues to explore the rich history of its unrivaled cast recording and film soundtrack catalogs with the release of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (August 13) -- previously unavailable on CD.

The soundtrack of the 1978 movie version of Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway masterpiece, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC finally finds its way to CD. Directed by Hal Prince, the all-star cast features Elizabeth Taylor, who sings the famous “Send in the Clowns,” Diana Rigg, Lesley-Ann Down, Len Cariou and Hermione Gingold. This newly-remastered CD is transferred from the original stereo masters, and includes a previously unreleased instrumental cue, along with two other instrumental cues taken from the mono soundtrack of the film. The complete version of "Every Day a Little Death" is also included from the mono soundtrack, as the carriage ride verse written for the film was not included on the stereo master. Featuring liner notes by Sondheim archivist Peter E. Jones, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC will be released exclusively for purchase via MasterworksBroadway.com on August 13 in a limited quantity of Manufacture-On-Demand CDs as well as digital download. The CD will be available through Arkiv Music on September 10, plus downloads through digital service providers the same day.

Masterworks Broadway is a label of Sony Masterworks. For email updates and information on Masterworks Broadway please visitwww.masterworksbroadway.com.

As I live in the UK, I am unable to order the M-O-D original pressing of this CD. As a Sondheim fan, can anyone help me, please?

Matt

Gladly. Buy the digital download or wait till general release through ArkivMusic.

(Translation: I really don't know what help you need here, there are two other ways to get it. Apologies if my snark offended.)

No offence taken.

Ideally I'd like a copy of the original M-O-D release, so if anyone is able to obtain a copy for me please get in touch! I can send money via Paypal.

I'm probably displaying complete ignorance but I don't believe the download will be available in the UK - certainly not for some time. As for ArkivMusic, who are they? Do they ship to UK customers?

Maybe I need to do some research.

Thanks anyway,

Matt.

In case the information is unclear, the soundtrack will be available on CD format from both Masterworks Broadway, to be followed from Arkiv later on. I think both accept PayPal and ship internationally.

Arkiv's release should be virtually the same (and, it sounds like, will be on a CD-R as will Sony's.) They're a dependable company--I have their re-release of Bernstein's opera A Quiet Place and it sounds great and has full packaging (including a very thick libretto.)

I'm excited for this. Of course much great music is cut--but what is there, I actually prefer on the soundtrack (Liz Taylor and her voice dubber aside) to the OBCR... The performances from Len and Laurence are even more assured, I think, I don't mind the changes made to songs (Now/Soon/Later being the new structure and edit for that song with Henrik/Erik's vocals lowered which means--God help the neighbours--I can sing along, The Weekend in the Country being slightly edited by gaining a bit for Mme Armfeldt, etc,) Diana Riggs is perfection and Little Death has even better orchestrations with Tunick's added strings--although the added "carriage verse" which wasn't on the LP is not Sondheim's finest work...--and I like the new material.

But I'll wait for Arkiv's release.

I think both the Sony and Arkiv releases are being advertised as CD-R On Demand, which may be the concern to the UK poster if he/she is unfamiliar with the term. They are regulation CD's pretty much universally playable. I wouldn't worry. I've already pre-ordered my copy from Masterworks and I can't wait.
