Posted: 8/8/13 at 7:59pmWhy would a name actress like Tovah Feldshuh who has headlined shows want to bother learning a part to be a vacation replacement in a supporting role for 12 performances? Is the understudy not capable of handling it? Is this a tryout for her to possibly take over the role when Martin leaves? If not, just don't get why doing this would be of interest to her.

I suggested the possibility of her taking over for Martin when her contract is up. But maybe, it just sounded like fun. Or its a role she's always wanted to play.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

I'm glad it's finally confirmed. Given it's already August 8th, I was about to suggest that the title of the other thread of "Andrea Martin out all of August" be changed to "Andrea Martin out any of August??"
In terms of having a "name" replacement for a relatively short run, I'm guessing it's partially to see if it would work out long-term when Martin leaves. Also, the only member of the ensemble within about 30 years of being the right age is Stephanie Pope, who is not Martin's understudy, so bringing in a vacation sub makes sense. And with so many of the acrobats being out recently, the producers may feel that things are being re-arranged enough as it is, and they don't want to complicate things by having to re-arrange them again while Martin has a planned absence.
That Martin's absence is nowhere close to "all of August," though , begs the question of whether she is really extending her contract past September or not...

Posted: 8/8/13 at 11:17pmmy guess is that they only have one u/s for Berthe(Sabrina Harper). So I'm assuming the producers felt it best to bring in someone from outside the show.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

It wont hurt grosses, as the advance is so strong those dates are probably already sold out or close to it.
Tovah's been away from Broadway for quite a while-she might be wanting to get herself out there, as well as show herself as a team player since her reputation is so awful.

Like others said, I would imagine it's to test out whether or not she could be a potential replacement for Martin. Also, with all the acrobats out, and only one swing, it would be risky having the only Berthe cover and only swing fill in for those 12 performances.

Martin said in a recent interview that she's strongly leaning towards leaving when her contract expires at the end of September in hopes of moving back to Los Angeles (where her two sons now both live).
As someone else said, if she's not taking an extended leave as leverage for extending, I'd venture to guess this is a try-out in advance of Feldshuh potentially taking over permanently in the fall. I'm sure she'd quickly drop out of a show at 59E59 to do so.

Is this just a mistake or will an understudy be on the week of the 12th to the 18th?
"Tovah Feldshuh (Irena's Vow, Golda's Balcony) will play the role of "Berthe" on Friday, August 9 through Sunday, August 11 and Tuesday, August 20 through Sunday, August 25 while two-time Tony Award winner Andrea Martin is on vacation. Ms. Martin returns to the role full-time on Tuesday, August 27."

I've never seen Rigby live. Is she FUNNY enough? No doubt she can handle the acrobatics, but would she be interesting in the role and not just...basic?
No doubt Tovah is being prepped to take over or do the tour/London/whatever. Also, since Martin just won the Tony having a "name" replacement helps curb the disappointment of audience members.

Posted: 8/9/13 at 2:59pmI would LOVE to see Christine Ebersole in this bit. I know she's a theatre legend and all, but I know her mostly for her comedy work. She is very lovable but saucy on the mediocre "Sullivan And Sons" sitcom, and was a standout during her appearances on Saturday Night Live back in the day.
