Wow, did I misunderstand this thread. I thought it was news that they were making a cast of Clay Aiken so we could get limited edition life size statues of him for our living rooms. I'm soooo disappointed.

I thought it meant cast as in hurl. I thought it was a new game where I could do things like cast Clay Aiken into the ocean, etc.

If Chenoweth gets this Dolly Revival up and running he could play Ambrose.

I used to like Clay, but his fans have now turned me off him. Shame.

It's weird to see how his persona has shifted. Back in the Idol days he seemed very genuine but now every moment, every gesture, every word seems very rehearsed and stagey- like he's aware he's being watched and he's putting on a show. His "performance" is very un-genuine.

Couldn't disagree more. I had the pleasure of meeting him recently in conjunction with some work I was doing in NY & he was quite charming & down-home that afternoon. Even spent some time with fans who happened to bump into him outside which I found to be very gracious on his part. Wasn't any different than I ever imagined him to be.

And what's the deal with disliking a performer because of a few obnoxious fans? Makes no sense. Every entertainer has the nutcases following them around - I've worked with enough to testify to that!

Very funny. No, it was at a rehearsal studio. But my point is that individual perceptions of celebs are often based on our own biases & usually have nothing to do with the reality of the person being judged. Clay's a delightful fellow & I know from personal experience. Granted, it was only from being with him for a few hours, but the one thing it did solidify is my belief that he'd make a great "Willy Wonka" which I forgot to state in my previous post. I know he has a lot of background working with kids which would obviously inform his work.

Broadway Baby I KNOW that celebs come off differently one-on-one ("in real life") and in performance or a talk show or "public appearance." That he's a nice guy in real life is wonderful but doesn't make him any better as a performer.

I don't understand, however, why Claymates need to defend against any less-than-glowing comment about their idol. Thank God LuPone Loons don't feel the need to do that- They'd never have time for anything else.

The Balladeer in Assassins, but not in a production where it's combined with Lee Harvey Oswald.

Joe, that's called being self conscious. Like Kathy Lee, ugh.

I'll probably be crucified for this, especially if Mikers sees it since I'm so obviously a Clay "hater"... but, really my only problem with Clay is that he is so completely disconnected when he performs. Regardless of the fact that he's an easy target, I don't make fun of him based on... well, the myriad of possibilities, because that's just not my style. But as a performer, at least a performer of theatre, he's underwhelming. Great voice, not so great presence.

BWW Review of Ogunquit's Joseph....

https://maine.broadwayworld.com/article/BWW-Reviews-JOSEPH-AND-THE-AMAZING-TECNICOLOR-DREAMCOAT-is-More-Than-Amazing-at-The-Ogunquit-Playhouse-20130812

"First and foremost, I will have to say that I have never watched American Idol. I've never been a big fan of the show's concept, nor am I really a fan of "pop" music. That said, I was BLOWN AWAY by Clay Aiken in the title role. His voice sounds limitless in the role to the point that it almost sounds TOO EASY for his versatile voice. I found myself wondering how many keys had been raised, or how many times he was singing an octave above what was written. His vocal display is truly astounding, and more than that it is always clear as bell and you never struggle to understand what he is singing. It was also refreshing to see a different take on JOSEPH; often times actors choose to make him boastful and almost full of himself. You can see from the very start that Mr. Aiken is a shy, humble JOSEPH who longs to be accepted by his brothers and it's his naïveté that brings upon his misfortune, not ill will. I was more than surprised by his turn in the second act as the Pharaoh's right hand man who attempts to trick his brothers. And his rendition of "Close Every Door" will bring you to your feet."

I wouldn't be surprised to see Clay in the role of Quasimodo because he has the vocal chops to do it and as Mike Nichols said of him "he is a great character actor". Bonus that he'd have the stage door swooning as well.

Everybody has a few bad pictures. That was not only 10 years ago but was a split second in time when he was squinting into the sun. It is also the one picture that the haters always turn to. If I had tens of thousands of photos out there in cyber space I'd be relieved that there are so few bad ones.
