What are some of your favorite Broadway songs? As crazy as it sounds one of mine right now is Raise You Up/Just Be from Kinky Boots haha. Great uplifting song and awesome way to end the show. Others for me include Man Up from Book of Mormon, Memphis Lives in Me and Steal Your Rock and Roll from Memphis, and For Good from Wicked. What are yours?
The world has gone mad today And good's bad today, And black's white today, And day's night today, When most guys today That women prize today Are just silly gigolos And though I'm not a great romancer I know that I'm bound to answer When you propose, Anything goes

That's tough because I like so many songs for very different reasons. Some of my favorite songs aren't even from my favorite shows. If I had to pick only one, it would probably be If I Loved You from Carousel. The emotional tension of the lyrics and the scene coupled with the romantic melody are almost unbearable.
"What can you expect from a bunch of seitan worshippers?" - Reginald Tresilian
If I were to pick solely based on what's played on my iPod most this year, it'd be the wonderful new "Loneliness of Evening" arrangement from CINDERELLA.
But as a former college radio DJ and musical omnivore, I can never ever claim a single favorite when there are so many varied and incomparable choices.
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
In Buddy's Eyes, which I seem to have listened to 1431 times on iTunes in various recordings (mostly Bernadette's). I love the arc of the song and subtext - Bernadette in particular does a great job at sounding incredibly sad by the end of the song. And the song sits so well with her voice. I love the texture of her voice when she sings the higher "And all I'd ever thought I'd BEEEE" notes. I love her controlled, slow vibrato - particularly near the end of the song. It is great song and performance right there. A peak in both Sondheim and Bernadette's careers.
What I can't stand about the song is when the last section is sung too fast. Not sure what is going on with many recordings (e.g. OBC) but the tempo Bernadette sings it is more consistent with what is written on the score.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Too many to choose from. Among my favorites would include:
On the Street Where You Live, My Fair Lady Lonely Town, On The Town Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love, Paris You'll Never Walk Alone, Carousel Somewhere, West Side Story
Coach Bob knew it all along: you've got to get obsessed and stay obsessed. You have to keep passing the open windows. (John Irving, The Hotel New Hampshire)
My all time favorite (for several years now, anyway) is "Some Other Time" from On the Town. The best interpreter is Barbara Cook on her cd "No One is Alone". It's funny how the lyrics change from version to version. Bab's is the best.
Strangely, I had never heard the song until the HBO show "Six Feet Under". The David character sings it as his audition song for the gay men's chorus. omg. I had to find out what that song was. wistful lyrics, unorthodox melody. perfect.
It would even be good at my funeral, right? "Where has the time all gone to? Haven't done half the things I want to. Oh Well....we'll catch up some other time."
