From the Blu-Ray.com review: ...there are recurrent issues with...overbearing audience noise which completely drowns out even ensemble singing...When the audience quiets down, dialogue is quite clearly presented, and several of the solo sung moments sound great.

I agree and I suspect that most of those overly enthusiastic audience members were added in during post editing. Those reactions were way over the top.

And I also noticed in the credits there was something like 5 or 6 string players listed. Surely that wasn't normal for Shrek?

Foster is an absolute delight, especially singing "Morning Person".

Is anyone else having trouble getting their Bluray copy to play? Mine will play the 20th Century Fox fanfare, but then goes to a black screen and doesn't load the film. What should I do?

Brian d'Arcy James probably was not at the Blu-ray/DVD release party since he is in rehearsals for 'Macbeth', which begins performances next week. However, he did share his thoughts about the recorded performance on Theater Mania with Daniel Breaker and Christopher Sieber.

I also am having an issue with the blu-ray disc. Is this a common problem?

So, after doing research online, the blu-ray just takes forever to load. I tried mine after I watched the DVD and it did work. Just very annoying. I do expect loading to not happen instantaneously, but this was far too long.

Anyway, I really enjoyed it. I know it isn't the best show ever, but it is fun fluff. Honestly, when I heard that the same group that filmed Rent on Broadway, I was very skeptical about how this would turn out, regardless of liking the show. I personally hated what they did with Rent. I thought the camera movement was too much for that. But, it worked in Shrek. I wonder if I think that because Shrek is a larger show. I was also so glad they didn't put a stupid intermission countdown like with Rent too. I can pause the show if I want to, I don't need that added in for me.

I thought the show looked really good. I think it really popped when I saw it on the blu-ray disc. My only real big problem is I don't get why they had to add I'm A Believer as an encore at the end. It was kind of stupid and didn't work too well, in my opinion, with this show. I think it works better in a show like Mamma Mia because of the nature of the show. I don't care that the song is famous from the actual movie, it was not a favorite moment for me here. This was the first I ever saw of it.

I think radical media did a great job with Rent! They didn't use the same "filming style" on Shrek, but it's a shame no final curtain call was included..

Great review for the Blu-ray from DVDTALK:

"Shrek the Musical is a visual and technical spectacle with an excellent cast, but the most important element, the musical numbers, just don't stick with you when all is said and done. However, if you missed out on the show's two-year run on Broadway, now's your opportunity, and the presentation is excellent, at a fraction of the price of the live performance. There's not much in the way of extras, but at least the musical is available for everyone to enjoy, unlike so many stage shows."

Just watched Shrek the Musical on DVD delivered from Netflix. I never was interested enough to go see it when it was playing on Broadway. I passed the theater almost everyday too after work. I never loved the animated movie(s).

WOW - I am so thankful I never went. I did not find much of anything enjoyable about the show. Netflix just confirmed that I didn't waste my time or money on a ticket by going to see it.

For anyone who saw it live and now on DVD - did it lose something in translation from seeing it in person to the DVD home version?

My sister was playing it for my niece tonight and I was spending time with them, didn't want to complain about it.

The answer to your question is, no, it is as awful on DVD as it was live. In fact, it is more embarrassing on DVD. The material is so bad your heart breaks for those who got involved thinking that, because of the creative team, it would be any good.

The stage musical makes the original Shrek film look like a cinematic masterpiece.

The end of act one, perhaps, is just as effective and touchy. The only part where true Tesori music can shine.

Lindsay-Abaire is just not good at writing for musical theatre.
