I was behind his winning 100% but was really surprised that he won it. I couldn't have been more thrilled.

Leading actress was the hard one of the night. I thought Amy Morton was the OBVIOUS winner when I first saw her, then came Christine Nielsen's brilliant performance, and then Laurie Metcalf. I almost feel it was "they were all so great, let's just give it to Ms. Tyson more for "sentimental" reasons, even though her performance was indeed great like the others.

I feel like Morton was overshadowed by the lavish praise Letts received for his George. If you go back and re-read the Times review, she's barely mentioned--it's a love letter to Letts. Many of us found Morton to be every bit Letts' equal, but the focus of this production seemed to be squarely settled on George.

I do wonder if THE OTHER PLACE was currently running, would Metcalf have been more of a player? (Also, if the play itself would have been nominated)

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I realized I never chimed in here just to say how excited I was when Tracy Letts won. I audibly gasped when his name was read, so ready for it to be Tom Hanks or Nathan Lane. That entire cast did such amazing work, and I'm glad at least one of them was recognized.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

So happy for Tracy Letts. What a year for him. New stint on Homeland, engagement to Carrie Coon and now a Tony for Best Actor. I thought his speech was lovely and meaningful with no extra fluff:
